Wireless Compatibility

I am wondering if different brands of wireless networking hardware are compatible.
Let's say I buy an HP router for my two desktops, but later I want to add my laptop and Xbox to the system. Would I have to buy an HP PC card for the laptop?
This is all assuming that they are of the same type. 802.11a or 802.11b, or whatever new thing they come out with tomorrow.

They should be compatible, but I have read that this is not always so. If you want to be more sure, buy the same brand. If you don't mind some extra problem solving and experimentation, just make sure they are compatible standards.
