Cannon Scanner High Pitch Whine

Hi, I have a cannon scanner that when connected to the usb port on my computer makes no high-pitched whine, but when connected to a Belkin BusStation usb hub (powered) it makes a continuous high-pitched whine. Can anyone explain why this should happen and what the solution may be. The scanner works fine, though the buzz is extremely annoying.

EMI maybe? I don't really know, but why not just plug it directly into the computer. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I need the hub because the usb port is under my desk and round the back, it makes it really difficult to unplug one device and plug in another without it. But now I've noticed the noise I would like to know the cause.

In case anyone's interested. I returned usb hub and exchanged it for another. Now no problem - so even though the original worked ok, there must have been some fault in the power supply it was giving out to scanner.
