I was just wondering if anyone out there knows how far a 200 Watt power supply can go?
Thanks

The PSU will handle any processor you can throw at it - it's the peripherals that eat up the power.
vid cards, external devices, plus (especially) physical devices such as HDDs etc will chew into the power ratings.
Mind you, PSUs are so cheap to replace, you needn't worry - a 3 or 4 hundred watt PSU is pretty reasonable.

I just want to see what I can do with this old computer - for kicks. It's going to have 256MB PC133, DVD\CD-RW, CD-ROM, 8MB Video Card, Modem, DVD decoder, 60GB Hard drive. Just wonder if anybody has any experience with this or can point me to something that can calculate how much power my PC would demand.
Thanks.

That awesome, thanks for the help. Would it be safe to assume that all these numbers are over estimates and would it be ok to trim off something like 10% off the total value? I'm just curious about this because I know someone that has a celeron by HP with a CD burner and it only has 100 Watts supply and according to the math it needs 125 to 140 Watts.

It would be safe to assume that you can get by with 10% less, but you may be shortening the life of your components, leading to weird behavior by your system and generally inviting trouble. Why bother with that when you can get a 300watt power supply for a few dollars more???
It is also true that a really good power supply will do better with less than advisable power output than a crummy one. I have some less expensive Allied power supplies that are adequate at 400 and 450 watts for systems that would probably do fine with the 350 watt Antec True Power that I have.
