Hi friends, as above. When i click on the floppy icon in my computer, it does not open and says to me to insert a floppy, but there is one already inside. The floppy works because i tested it in another comp. Also the current floppy is a new installation. The green light comes on and the floppy is recognized in the bios. Floppy swap is off.

Please help. I have had a long frustrating time (will tell more when I solve this problem). Thanks friends.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

The first thing I would do is to check all connections on the drive. If the power light comes on and stays on, it usually means the power connector is backward. The next thing I would do is go into Safe Mode, use Device Manager to Remove the floppy driver and let Windoze reinstall it on reboot. The next option would be to reset the BIOS to default settings or to try switching any BIOS settings that refer to the floppy to the opposite value that they are now.

If none of these options work, post back with more details about your system and the issues that led to this problem so that we have more info to work with.

Good luck,
Budfred

There is really not much that can go wrong with a floppy drive..
you have maybe 6 causes for trouble shooting:
Bad floppy diskette.
Not setup in CMOS.
Confliction with other hardware.
Not connected properly.
Bad drivers.
Bad hardware.
If you have gone thru these steps and it is still not functioning I'd say it is time for a new one...

I hope so anyway. It may be as simple as a defective floppy. I made the startup floppy in my laptop which also runs on windows Me. I assumed it worked. I also tested another floppy in the new installation which also did not work. So perhaps my floppies are defective. I will go home and try again and let you guys know if it works.

Yes, confirmed. It is a defective floppy and cable!

Yes, to have 2 defective floppy disks as well as a defective cable at the same time made things very difficult to diagnose! I am lucky I was able to get those things tested on another computer at work.
