Paint is a drawing program...Paintbrush...if you need to reinstall it go to Add/Remove programs and it will be under Windows Setup -> Accessories.

Did you check under Add/Remove, Windows Setup, then Accessories, then click on Details tab? Paint is under there in 98. If box is not checked, then you can check it, and insert your CD and install it. Do you have the full version of your OS? Can't imagine Paint not being there on the list if you do. Windows has .bmp files that wouldn't open anywhere else unless you've already installed another image program.

I went into accessies and it was there in NAME ONLY When I tried to open it a search screen came on and could not locate the file. That's because I think I deleted it when I first got the PC. I have to find a way to re-install it? Can you help? Maybe MS has a location to download it what do you think? TOM

It is on the installation CD, if you have the full version, if you have a computer by oone of the major manfacturers then, probably the only way to get it back is to use restore disk and restore the computer back to factory configuratiion, losing everything you've added. To get it back with the full version disk you must go to Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup and if it doesn't show up in Accessories then click Have Disk and browse the installation CD, it may find it.

I have a Recovery Disk and a Start up disk (the first) being from Microsoft! It came with my Blue light pc! But I would not want to lose what i have built up! Isn't there a download of this file somewhere in Microsoft downloads? TOM

Considering your circumstances, the best thing would probably be to borrow someone's 98 CD and Add/Remove the Paint program as previously described. Think that should work; we've done it before on another puter running 98. Otherwise, you might consider an inexpensive photo editing type program..some of them sell for as little as $20 and can do what Paint can do. Paint is pretty limited! I spent lots of time in it before buying a photo editing program..and truthfully, if you want to pull your hair out in frustration, spend some time trying to draw something by mouse in Paint! Plus, MS apparently didn't do any "fixing" of the Paint program from 95 to 98 because the same things like "custom colors" that wouldn't work in 95 also didn't work in 98. Just remembered too that quite a few of the programs like Word Perfect and Works have simple drawing programs in them also.

You did check in C/Program Files/Accessories and you no longer have a MSPAINT.exe? Reason I ask is because I thought it might be nice once to rename the My Documents folder to Kay Stuff...whoa! Unforeseen consequences and had to redo all sorts of path things so computer could "find" the renamed file.

I would abandon this quest for ms paint, you already have something if not paint itself taking care of your bmp's and other needs.. if you do a search on http://www.google.com/ you will find many FREE apps that are much better than mspaint. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

I looked all over the MS database and couldn't find anywhere to download MSPaint. Did a Web search..same results. There are programs that use MSPaint to display stuff, but I imagine that any program that will do bitmaps will do just as well. As Sea said, you can download some freeware from elsewhere...I did a "graphic freeware" search off google and got tons of listings.

In the process of searching, though, I found an excellent tutorial on Paint Here (http://www.andersongraphic.com/Computer101/Paint.htm)in case anyone else is interested. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Kay, I've told you before. You're sharp! Good sense of humor..."named My Documents to Kay's Stuff." lol! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Anyhow, why can't one of us just send this guy an attachment of the paint application in an email?

iisbob: I have PSP 6, and alas, the excellent tutorials they used to have have moved on to version 7. I haven't yet mastered all of 6..sniff. Left behind yet again.

nimnorf2: I thought of that, and the file (MSPaint.exe) is only 336 KB, but a program has other things (like dll files, right?) scattered here and yon, and I am not sure he still has those. TomTom did find a Paint95 at the MSKB, so hoping he will post back with results if he has tried to download and install it. My "favorite" option is borrow a CD and install through Add/Remove. I could easily be wrong, but seems the safest way to me.

Hi: this is tomtom and i did download the paint95.EXE and it gave me my MSPAINT AND ALL THREE dill"s and a read me text.Evidentally there is no later version! I am a little concerned though because it states in the read me that this file sometimes can give off an ERROR MESSAGE> MS CAUSED A INVALID PAGE FAULT IN MODULE MSPAINT.EXE AT 0137:0042d3fe and will close down this program! Now I am wondering if this happens too much to you Guys and Gals! Please let me know if any one has any thoughts on this,Thanks TOMTOM

WEll good for you TomTom http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I'm curious, where/how did you download the application. I wonder if I could have just emailed the attachment to you. (as per an earlier post)

To answer your question, I don't remember ever having error messages caused by MSPaint. Those things are no biggy anyway unless you've been working on something for some time and it happens. Otherwise, shake it off and re-boot. Some of the guys on this forum who know alot have already recommended to you not to waste your time with Paint if your going to edit or manipulate a BMP file anyway. There are better programs that do much better and have many more capabilities and are even given away for free as demos and trials (for like 30 days: if you don't buy their software at the end of the 30 days they come and take your children hostage, I think.) Hang in there bud.
peace
ps. I bought a cheap scanner for about $40.00 a couple years ago and it came with Photo Shop or maybe it was Photo Suite software for free. That program handles BMPs and Tiffs and a bunch of other picture formats that I don't even know what they are..... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nimnor: TomTom found it HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q162/5/00.asp). It does include three dll files that need to be put in the System folder. My understanding is that MS is replacing Paint.exe with a slightly different version to prevent the error code he asked about above, but could be wrong.

My scanner was only $39 after rebate! Seriously, though, it came with some nice "beginner" software and works a lot better as a whole than my husband's $80 scanner.

Kay, you've actually mastered PSP?!! wow, i bow to your superior intellect; i'm still bungling around with it( i have 7.1 ) and get it to perform as flawlessly as ulead used to run for me. Sometimes i think they over did the plumbing in it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif Seems like sometimes there is almost TOO many different commands to work with. That's why i still use MSpaint occasionally, so i can still see the tree without getting lost in the forest of PSP. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

iisbob: While I much appreciate your bowing (!), you didn't read what I said above correctly. I said I hadn't yet mastered 6. Agree on your complaint on complexity though..sometimes feels like you're flying a jet with bunches of instruments to set and check before you can get the silly thing off the ground. But, hey, when I do get it off the ground and "flying" beautifully, there is an enormous feeling of accomplishment. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

A couple of places that might have some interesting and useful alternatives if you can't get Paint installed and working:

Freeware Home (http://www.freewarehome.com/)

SimTel (http://www.simtel.net/)

PC World (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/browse/0,cat,518,sortIdx,1,00.asp)

For Paint itself, I agree with the above that the best way to go would be to get a win98 CD for a half hour and do it from Add/Remove Programs. That includes time to let the cat out, go for a refill, change CD's, and a bathroom break...in other words installation should be about 3 minutes total...
