Hello. I have an HP 8754c which came with a PIII 800MHz processor. Full specs here (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph06041). I have upgraded the OS (WinXP HomeEd), ram (384MB), video card (GF4 MX440) and CD-RW (TKD 48x24x48).

I am now looking at possibly upgrading the CPU. Browsed http://www.newegg.com and found that there are now Celeron CPU's that use socket 370. The Celerons I found are FCPGA2. How can I find out if this can be used in my existing motherboard.

Many thanks...

According to the specs, you can only go up to 800 which is what you have. However, that includes the statement that it is the highest HP supports. You could look up the BIOS info to see what the highest level that will support. I doubt you are going to do much better though.

HPs, like most ready mades are pretty hard to upgrade. Like Budfred said, it isn't very likely you can go much higher, if any at all, and definitely not to a 1.6 GHz or better. And stepping down to a Celeron, even a faster one is not really an improvement. They have a much smaller L2 cache, which would mean poorer performance. A 1 gig++ Celeron probably will equal your 800 PIII, it may even be a little worse, performance wise.

Went to Intel (http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/list.asp?ProcFam=25&CorSpd=5071&SysBusSpd=ALL&PkgType=ALL) website to get specs of processor. HP site indicates 133MHz FSB (front side bus). Intel site indicates that PIII 800MHz only came in 100MHz FSB.

Did HP mis-state the spec or overclock the bus speed?

www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1) has the Celeron (PIII based) 1.2GHz 256k L2 cache with 100Mhz FSB. This would have the same L2 cache size as my current PIII.

Anyways, guess the wife is getting new cpu/motherboard/memory. Lucky her =)

Thanks for the replies,

Must have been an odd page on Intel's site, because the PIII 800 did indeed come in a 133MHz flavor.

In any case, the main problem with trying a Celeron over 800MHz is the fact that those Celerons are FCPGA2! Hehe, in case you don't get that  it means that it was a different core architecture (Tualatin) and you may be gambling by trying to get it to work. The last of the Socket370 boards had to be specifically certified as "Tualatin compatible" so they could handle the high-speed PIII's and Celerons.

If you could get it to work, tho, Celerons are great overclockers... :D
