i am having a little problem with my amd athlon xp1800+ cpu. my bios was reset and i can't get it to see the cpu at it's correct speed. it sees it as 1150MHz or something similar. i have a shuttle ak31.31 motherboard and 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM. there is no fsb jumper on the motherboard, so everything has to be done in the bios. the cpu clock is set to 100 by default and i can change it up to 166. i put in 133 and saved the bios settings and rebooted. it sees the processor as an xp1800+, but it freezes on startup at the windows screen. it won't even boot in safe mode. there are some voltage settings for the cpu and multipliers, but i have no idea what to set them to so the processor will work at it's correct speed.

also, would running RAM at a faster speed than the fsb cause a lot of crashes? i am just wondering this be ause on another machine i am playing with it kept crashing during installs and pretty much whenever. i saw in the bios that the fsbwas at like 200 and the ram was at 266. i changed it so it would go by the clock speed and it hasn't really been acting up yet although i am still testing. any help or suggestions are appreciated.

FSB = 133
multiplier = 11.5

the 1800 runs at 1530 mhz

thanks.
i am however having some serious problems with the other computer. this one has a jumper for the front side bus and when i put it to 133 it sees everything fine but has fatal exception errors like crazy. it's an fic an17 motherboard and xp2000+ processor with 256DDR RAM. i am testing it right now with hot cpu tester pro. everytime the jumper is on 133 it comes up with a memory fatal exception error within a minute. i am testing it on 100 fsb and the test has been going for the past 30 minutes. any suggestions?

One word: heat! Try this - set the fsb to 133, leave your case open, take a house fan and blow it into the case during testing. Does that solve your problem? If so, add more case fans to your rig and get a better HSF unit on the CPU.

You have some Funky RAM that will only pass

if you back it down.

It is also causing your fatal exception errors.

Luck.

Zfunk try this program. Go to www.bootdisk.com and d-load MemTest86. It's a great memory tester & FREE :cool: It runs from DOS and the program will make a boot disk for you to use. If you even get one error it's too many. Ranchdog told me about this program

I was swapping cpus between computers because i think one of them has the newer throubred core or something and it doesnt work good on the one machine at the correct speed. anyway i put the xp2000 back in my machine because it was originally in there and set the fsb to 133 in the bios (also just tried the multiplier). it sees it as xp2000+ fine, but it freezes during the windows screen. when i change it back to 100fsb everything works fine. any ideas? the cpu itself is operating at around 50 degrees during normal usage and like 30 on bios startup.
