View Full Version : Windows won't accept my extra RAM

I added a 16mb SD RAM chip to complement the 64mb I have pre-installed. The system bios shows the additional RAM and I can run in DOS with it, but Windows 98 won't start unless I remove the extra chip. The error message "Windows security fault. Please restart." (or something similar) comes up right after the Win98 intro screen. Any ideas?

was the 16 a different bus speed than the 64? ( like PC66, compared to the PC100 you probably have ) is it a DIMM? if it has small black modules on both sides ( the memory itself ) then its a DIMM, which most all systems run. Could just be a bad stick, try the system with just the 16, if it boots and runs-though windows will be extremely sluggy with that small amount of RAM-then you know its a good stick, memory ( next to vid cards ) can be the most frustating part of a PC to diagnose and to install correctly. Maybe one of the geek masters on here will have some better info on this problem if my post doesn't help. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Go into BIOS, save changes and exit without changing anything. Sometimes this has to be done just to tell BIOS the memory is there, and once it sees that amount as the standard or default amount it will work fine.

Could also be the wrong type of memory for your board. Parity, non-parity, EDO, ECC etc.

One other possibility is you are trying to use 72 pin SIMM along with 168 pin DIMM on a motherboard that does not support mixing those types. On some boards it will work, but only if the SIMM memory is in a specific bank. Usually mixing them is not recommended.
