Ok, the problem is when starting from a cold shutdown, the os select screen freezes. Boot into safe mode ok. Checked the boo.ini file, ok. Can reboot, no problem there, only from a cold shutdown does it freeze. So what is causing this? MBR corrupted??? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Ok, from a cold shutdown, you boot, it hangs, you reboot it doesn't hang.

It sounds like maybe you are trying to boot before the drives are fully spun up. You can try adding a little delay to the process by disabling the "quick POST" in BIOS.

I had a similar problem with a new hard drive in a server and as suggested by mjc, i disabled the quick post in the bios and it has worked fine since.

After posting original message I was so disgusted that when I shutdown and tried to reboot the push button fell out (has happened before so I knew what had happend---poor design). I just stayed away for a day. This morning I got in there and did two things: one was to put a tiny bit of super glue to the internal push button and the other was to switch the ram. Started the machine and it acted as if it never had any problems. Now that has me wondering WHY???? Why would switching the sticks of ram make a difference when the two are suppose to be the same...... or are they?? I looked them over and from what I could see they have the same writing, by that I mean the same manufacturer, numbers, etc with one exception one is slightly bigger than the other. The ram was given to me free and since it was something my mobo could support according to the mobo's manuel as well as being an upgrade to the previous ram. Sure has been a learning experience though I will admit that excatly what and why it has happened I'm not sure. The quick post suggestion I did not do as there was no need.

It could be the RAM was just not seated well and moving it seated it better.

It could be that your board likes the RAM rearranged for no particular reason.

It could be that moving the RAM didn't do anything, but securing the switch fixed the problem.

It is great that it is working, congratulations....:)
