I currently have a Gateway 450MHz Pentium II Computer. I'm trying to upgrade (or see if it's worth my wild to upgrade) my processor. I read all the documantation on gateways website and was unable to find out how big of a processor I could upgrade to, so I called their tech support....and this is what I was told That my mother board has a slot 1 connector and I could upgrade to a Intel Pentium II or III Slot 1 processor of 450/500/550 MHz

I thought that Pentium II's had a complete different slot (kinda sideways)
Could I actually upgrade a Pentium II to a Pentium III ?

Thanks for any help,
Stealth

One more additional question, what's the difference between the SECC2 OEM version of a processor and a retail version? and could I use the 256K processor as opposed to the 512k?

OEM versions don't have a heatsink/fan...

The early P3s were slot 1 just like the p2s...although they are secc2 instead of secc1 (all this has to do with is the retention mechanism, and I think they are still compatible, at least, the ones they sell will work for both, not sure about the ones gateway installs)

I don't know that they made a slot 1 P3 with 256 cache as opposed to 512, but if they did, it should work...
