I have an older computer Aptiva Pent 2, 351 MHz mdB0 memory 639 MB (57% Utilized)hard drives 28.65 GB, 7.86 GB.

My problem is pretty simple. I can't download anything. My dialog window which normally opens before you actually download no longer appears or appears so quickly that I can not put in if I want to save to disk or from source.

Any suggestions? I'm at my wits end with this.

Few things have you changed your IE ??
are you running a firewall?? What windows are you running?

Try going into Explorer and delete
the Temp. Internet files a few at a time and also the
History files a few at a time

Few things have you changed your IE ?? No, I can't download anything to change anything. I wanted to upgrade to IE 6 but can't because I can't download.

are you running a firewall?? I've turned the firewall off

What windows are you running? I am running windows 98. I did deleate the temp files. It didn't help.

Is there any way to access the dialog windows? This seems to be the problem.

I've run norton and can find no problems.

Have you got Go!zilla on that machine...

press the ALT key while you click a link to download a file. If the File Download dialog box appears, a damaged Go!Zilla installation may be the cause of this issue

I am sorry i need to ask questions but... there are a lot of reasons that would stop you from D/L

So... do you have:
1. Any download accelerator/queing applications installed?
2. Any changes made to the registry either manually or by any tweaking software?
3. When did this occure and what was changed on your computer prior to the occurence of the problem.
4. Did the system act unstable shortly before the diag box stopped working?
5. What are you current running tasks?

If you can get another browser via ftp and if you are familiar with the console windows FTP app, you could try downloading an update or different browser that way.

1. Any download accelerator/queing applications installed?

None that I know of.

2. Any changes made to the registry either manually or by any tweaking software?

No I don't think so.

3. When did this occure and what was changed on your computer prior to the occurence of the problem.

I'm not sure when it occured as I don't do alot of downloads. I went to download an update of IE and couldn't.

4. Did the system act unstable shortly before the diag box stopped working?

No.

5. What are you current running tasks?

Not sure what this question means. Do you mean the programs I have on the startup menu? I haven't a clue as to what the abbreviations mean in my crash guard window that goes up when I press control/alt/del. There's alot of them. I do have Norton systems 2000 running on the computer. I also removed some of the memeory which was one suggetion I was given.

Thanks for all the help so far. I am now able to download the new verision of IE but not anything that requires the dialog box.

If you have a lot of stuff running in the background that may well be the problem. You can look here for an idea of what most of them are:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

And/or you can go here and download the programs Startup List and Hijack This, then post the logs so that we can look and maybe tell you what you can (or may need to) get rid of:

I went to download an update of IE and couldn't.
This could have somehow "screwed" with your current IE; a chicken or egg situation maybe. Could be worth an IE repair from Add/Remove.

If you can create or find a LINK to the file (that is the full URL including the filename as it appears in the address bar) for downloading you could try RClicking on the LINK and choose "Save Target As"; that might work for you.

Where are you trying to download the file(s) from? M$ Update site maybe because M$ likes to do this via an installer file rather than giving you control over the downloads.

PS There have been a couple of suggestions that you download programs but of course you can't download normally yourself. This could be a solution if you can get to another computer with internet access and a CD burner of course. If you can do this I would suggest getting Opera 7 - others will have their favorite downloaders of course but Opera's works well and provides you with an alternate browser too.

Try R-Clicking on ftp://ftp.tiscali.nl/pub/mirrors/opera/win/701/en/std/ow32enen701.exe and then "Save Target As" if you want to try downloading Opera 7.01 for Windows (without Java for now - so only about 3MB) using this method.
