at boot i get this: invalid boot ini file booting from c:\windows\ where would i go to fix this in xp pro beside system restore, since i have it shut down. Thanks

With XP you could boot with the CD in the drive and it will give you options including repairing the install. I would try that and see if it is fixed.

dah why didn't i think of that? Thanks Budfred
it did not work = where would be the ini files in xp
02-01-2003, 08:27 PM
in msconfig there are no system ini files showing.are they hidden?
02-01-2003, 10:22 PM
Probably. WinXP tends to be set up to protect you from yourself, so most system files and a number of other files are hidden. If you haven't checked it out already, you might want to check out BlackViper's site for info on how to get XP running more efficiently.

Hawk, you can edit the boot.ini file using notepad. You can check it out in msconfig and make some changes there. If you have a standard setup I can give you the wording if you want it.

Steve in msconfig, in system ini there is nothing showing just a blank screen.so yes i would like the wording to it. Thanks i think it's a standard setup. sofware installed

"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows Could Not Start" Error Messages When You Start Your Computer
02-03-2003, 01:58 PM
Hawk, I'm not exactly sure of what you're looking for. At the start of the thread you're talking about the boot.ini file and then you change to system.ini.
On my XP install, I have various drivers listed. I doubt that it would be the same for yours.
Follow the info in THIS (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;Q289022/) link if you need to edit your boot.ini file.
Hope this helps...:)
BTW, make sure you have "show system files" enabled in Folder Options. That might be why you can't see the system.ini files.
