Hello everyone, must say what a useful forum this is. I've learnt more browsing on here in 2 days than reading countless mags etc.

I would like some views on Norton Internet Security package. I have just installed NIS and have noticed it has slowed my Broadband connection. Do all firewalls and virus protectors slow your system down as much as NIS ? Am considering uninstalling NIS and giving AVG and Zoneone a try. Does anyone on here run these two with a broadband connection...if so is there any noticeable slowdown on your system?

Many thanks

Let me put it mildly, Norton can be a pig.

You probably will have to tweak the Norton settings in order for it not hog things so much.

I have run AVG and ZA on a dialup connection with no noticeable slowdowns.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

What mjc said. I run ZoneAlarm also and it doesn't seem to have any impact on my connection speed.

I have used various utility suite programs in the past and they tend to be quite bloated. They install with almost every feature enabled and some features may not even apply to your system. It is a good idea to read the documentation and turn off anything that is not directly protecting your system.

On another related note. I believe Norton only protects you from assaults from outside while ZoneAlarm also monitors traffic from your computer to the net. Since trojans can infect and work from within your computer, this extra protection is nice.

You don't necessarily need to throw the whole thing out, just try paring it down. I run Norton AV and don't have any trouble with it. It got the only virus that I know of ever attacking my system and quarantined it so that I could delete it before it had a chance to do any damage. AVG is supposed to be very good, but you can use both as long as you don't run them at the same time and AVG is free.

Personally dislike NIS. However, it DOES monitor traffic both into and out of the computer.

Also; have run Norton and AVG simultaneously for ages without any conflicts. They CAN both be running at the same time. He He; of course I always wear BOTH a belt and braces.
