Hi,
i just completed assembling my system last thursday.
i have a AMD THUNDERBIRD 1.2GHZ w/266FSB. this is mounted on the MICROSTAR (MSI) K7-MASTER motherboard. i have 256MB DDR ECC MICRON memory.
i installed windows 2000 PRO as the OS. the power supply is ENERMAX 431 watts.
on the initial boot-up, i saw i had only a 900MHZ processor - i immediately thought i got ripped off.
with the MSI msnual in hand, i went into the BIOS and then to each screen. i set everything the way MSI recommended.
however, as with all manuals, they just don't seem to tell you everything do they? it's like, "well, we're not sure so we ain't gonna mention it in the manual".
in any event, there is a screen named "FREQUENCY, HOST/CPI CLOCK". in this screen, you have the options to change the VCORE VOLTAGE, RATIO AND BUS SPEED. not being an ardent computer person, i did some quick researching on the net.
i set the VCORE VOLTAGE at 1.7, the RATIO at 9 and the BUS SPEED AT 133/33.
i rebooted and it then told me i had a 1200MHZ processor. i was soooooo happy!
after a very, very long day, i powered down to give it a good nite's rest.
the next morning, i booted up and the VCORE, RATIO AND BUS SPEED had all gone back to their default settings and i had a 700 MHZ processor again.
i went back into setup, reset the VCORE, RATIO AND BUS SPEED - saved it to CMOS and rebooted. however, this has happened 4-5 times now - the VCORE, RATIO AND BUS SPEED not being held in CMOS. yes, each and every time i exit and save to CMOS. does anyone have any idea as to why BIOS will not permanently store these settings.
thank you.

Do you know if any of your other BIOS changes are being lost?

There may be a reset BIOS jumper that is not in the proper position, or some other jumper out of place...grab the manual and check what eachj jumper should be set at......

go to AMD's website and download a small utility there called " cpu info", it's a small program that runs in windows to show you the exact speed/settings of you r cpu-it won't solve your problems, but it will give you xtra info to work with.

Good Morning,
many thanks to the replies i received concerning my PHOENIX/AWARD BIOS and losing the VCORE VOLTAGE, RATIO AND BUS SPEED.
in the manual, it does refer to the jumper for setting processor speed. it it (the manual) does a good job of identifying the jumper on the board. the jumper is a 2 pin jumper. the jumper is either on or off. if the jumper is in place, the data will be kept. if the jumper is not in place, the data will not be kept. i have attempted both jumper positions and neither will hold the settings. as far as the other data in the BIOS, it is being held and there are no changes being made there. only in the FREQUENCY/VOLTAGE SETTINGS.
i have emailed MICROSTAR (MSI) and explained to them (tech support)what is happening but i have yet to receive an email back from them. this has been 4 days now. i also called them (tech support)last friday, they have NO TOLL FREE NUMBER. i held for 20 minutes then hung up.

there are only 5 items in this screen - the auto detect, which i have ENABLED; the spread spectrum (i have no idea what the spread spectrum is) but i have it DISABLED; the vcore voltage (which is adjustable and i set to 1.7; the ratio (which is adjustable and i set to 9); and the bus speed which is adjustable and i set to 133/33.
thanks again.

Hey,

Try turning the auto detect off.

Cheers,
