Why won't my CD-R be detected by all machines?

I burned my first CD-R last night using my new (out-of-date) HP 8230e CD-R/CD-RW drive. I can read the CD-R only on some computers. Others give "device not ready". what's happening?

It could be a matter of drives not being properly aligned, it could be due to the session not being closed out fully when burned and it could be that some CD players will simply not read homebrewed CDs very well. Those are some of the common reasons. Did you fully close the disk out before ejecting it. If not, you might want to do that and see if it works better.
