I doubt anyone even plays this game, but I'll try asking anyways... Privateer is an older game (about 1996) and I haven't played it for a while. In fact, when I tried using it on my new PC, it doesn't work. I can't get the sound to work, possibly because my chipset is too advanced. If anyone knows anything about this, please help me.
I use a AMD Athlon 950 MHz, 256 RAM, 40/20/48 CD-RW, built-in sound card, on a ECS Elitegroup mainborad (K7S5A).

What OS are you using?
if your on WinXP and you have a lot of space on your hard drive it mite help you to set up a dual boot with Win98 so you can play your older games.

Windows 98, but its run out of DOS, so it doesn't really matter.

My limited experience running DOS based games on a newer system (post Pentium) aren't good. Usually they played way too fast or not at all. Not sure of the technical reasons, probably has to do with the languge they were written in?? - but I doubt you'll be able to pull it off...
What, exactly, doesn't work?
If it is the sound not working, do you have onboard sound? Do you have SB /legacy support enabled in BIOS?
If the video doesn't work have you tried changing things in the shortcut properties?
That should be able to run under Win95, so there shouldn't be too much of a problem to get it running under 98. Plus it is new enough that Pentium chips were starting to hit the scene, not MMX enableed ones, so the speed thing should not be an issue.

Firstly, I can get the game to work perfectly in DOS, if I disable the sound. There is no speed, graphics or controller issues. The only problem is that when I attempt to select a sound card from setup and run the game, I get a "Sound setup incorrect, JEMM unloaded." message. I can play it fine, but I'd rather not play with no sound.
Secondly, it cannot run under Windows, neither 95 nor 98. The game wants me to create a shortcut to run in DOS. If I try to run in Windows, it gives me a "noems" message (NO EMS). I've tried to get it to work under Windows, and now I'm pretty sure there's no way for that to happen.
I have onboard sound, but it doesn't have a legacy device on it, I don't believe. However, it is enabled in the BIOS.
