I have a work station that is extremely slow
I noticed the following IRQ settings, could a conflict
cause this computer to run slow???
10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 S3 Trio 64v2-DX/GX(775/785)
11 IRQ Holder for Steering
11 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter(NC 100v2)

Could 1 of the "holders" be deleted, so the nic card
has a setting by itself?

Hi,

I believe that is the standard setup. I wouldn't delete any of them.

As for your computer running slow, do you run Scandisk and Defrag on a regular basis? Do you have a ton of programs running in the background, such as Task Manager, virus scanner, etc.?

Post back with some system specs, i.e., CPU speed, amount of RAM, OS, motherboard, etc..

Cheers,

Big Blue is right..."sluggish" is something else. I have the IRQ holders on several of the IRQs. Just the IRQ Steering thingabob (technical term for I can't remember the stupid name!).

A new motherboard & faster CPU maybe???...It's not going to go very fast even if you just upgraded the Server to a 1.6 GIG screamer....your station goes at 166 megahertz and no quicker.....a bit of RAM might help marginally.

Agree with Randy that, if possible, getting to 64 MB of RAM might help. You didn't say which Windows? HERE (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/7e7f15291a25d938882567e50048a048/435264571c8cf32a882569ba00009b6c?OpenDocument)is a Symantec article on optomizing performance. We haven't tried it yet on our puters, but we did do it on a friend's puter and his is still running along fine after two months. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Another thing to check is what BigBlue said about stuff running in the background. A site that lists what is safe to uncheck in StartUp is here (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm).

You didn't try to put ME on that puter, didja? Just kidding...

Aside from the excellent suggestions above, you can also check the contents of the following directories:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (You can empty this yourself)

C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES (Best to let your browser do it)

If these folders are full, performance will suffer.
