Hello Everyone: I was concidering making a Backup Copy of My Windows98SE REGISTRY! But I thought I read somewhere that Windows98 has 5 Copies stored on my pc Already! How can I find out if it really is stored for sure and IF it is NOT What are the instructions for doing Backup of this sort? I plan on getting a CDRW for this reason! Thanks TOM

HI, and welcome to the forums! Yes you heard correctly, W98 does make 5 backups of your registry-you can access them from a DOS prompt( you have to be in DOS mode to restore with one of them. They are replaced every time you shutdown/restart your pc, in progressive order( ie #5 becomes 4, then 3, etc..) each new restart overwriting the last copy.
If you want to save a permant copy just open run-type regedit, click on " registry " tab, choose " export registry file.. then just name it something like goodreg1; save it to a file of your choice( my docs would be a good one) then fire up your cd burner and save it! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

This is embarrassing to admit, but I still haven't gotten around to checking to see if my 98 is indeed saving 5 copies. Not sure that is the default setting. Found two articles at the MSKB recently regarding this very question. Registry checker (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q183/8/87.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=registry&rnk=30&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WINME)
A lot of times in this forum, one of the best first things to try is to restore the registy...found THIS (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q221/5/12.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=registry&rnk=48&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WINME) for that.
Edit: Just looked at that second article and it does say that default is five copies.
