I was on Thermaltake's site earlier looking for a link and came across one of their new product line additions: http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/ductingMod.htm
After commenting on sleddog's "insensitivity" to those of us who might be running higher CPU temps, I thought that a poll might be in order. Hopefully, this will confirm for many of us that we are not alone (i.e., justifcation by association :p )! Inviting us then, to not feel so bad that we are not as "kewl" as others might be! ;)

:D Was wondering when someone would come out with a cowel
That is one reason mine stays low But i used a homemade aluminium cowel with 3" flex hose piped from out-side the case. Must be nice to have molding injectors to creat something..

And I suspect Yoda, that if you've a window to sport your inner
"trappings," that something like the Thermaltake cowling might be much easier on the eyes than hand formed aluminum...LOL
However, kudos on your advance solution to a known problem!
Have you seen these? http://www.thermaltake.com/products/subzero/subzero4g.htm

Ohhhhhhh I'm definatly going to purchase one ;) or two Definatly a better looking solution. (won't look like a Ghetto job):D
Now that second link I'll have to read about looks very interesting!!!
Thanks

They must be "really" new...I couldn't find them on NewEgg, neither did a Google search pull up a seller who has them in stock...
Would you post a source if you locate? I'll do the same if I find! ;)

Yes, the MicroCenter does carry Thermaltake products. I was in there the other day and was snooping around that particular section. I was looking to see if they had front USB ports that might fit into a vacant 3.5 floppy bay...yep they do!
Didn't see the cowl there...I think it would have jumped out at me if they were. There was a thread a while back where we were discussing air flow and fan placement...it was while researching that I came to an awareness of the air flow "vacancy" problem directly below the CPU fans as they are currently installed.
The cowl seems to be a viable solution...
BTW...the MicroCenter, it's like Computer Heaven. And, it is strategically positioned to provide an outlet for me when traffic is jammed up and I'm working on that end of town. I pick up a Caribou White Chocolate Mocha (yum yum) and head on over to browse 'til traffic eases up. Between the two I get quite a buzz...:p

My HP Pavilion has a cowl arrangement for the CPU that vents out the back of the computer, although I am not sure if it blows in or out (have to check that the next time I open it up). I always thought it was kind of dumb, but maybe not so dumb after all. It sure takes up a lot of room though.....
I tried a couple vendors on the Where to Buy link for that cooler, but no luck. Probably too new...

I'm always a fan of a new poll...Nice one WYZMN!
Oh, and I'm cool  ...Well, maybe not as cool as some of you dudes. :( WOW!
But with a fairly basic fan configuration, and my AMD running in the lower end of what appears to be the "most popular" range so far, I guess I'm "cool enough" :p
And, as I think I mentioned in another thread somewhere, there's always the refrigerator again. (My wife finally had enough and made me take it out.) :D
(Edit) Gee, I love to do that!
Just in case the "most popular" range changes, I'm usually somewhere between 38 and 42..Not the best, but not so bad...And (cross fingers), no problems for quite some time. (Long as I keep that damn spider out of there)

Yeah jabar...you be cool! :D
I thought about it afterwards...looking at the 10 possible categories...to break the poll down into small increments. A span of 10C is a lot when you're talking CPU temps. A degree or two cooler is a very coveted commodity...
Well, I settled for the route more commonly traveled, I was lazy! :D
But, this will be a pretty fair representation on how folks are doing.
jabarnutcase
02-09-2003, 10:34 PM
Yep- "Lazy" or not, I think you have a pretty good range there. We kind of strive to stay below that "50, 40, 30 threshold or whatever.
Sure am glad no one is in the "burning down the house" catagory yet...
Yikes! If they were, they probably wouldn't get a chance to vote anyway!
(Edit) HeHe...I just couldn't resist. :D
AMD claims my Athlon's "Max" operating temp is 90C. Ha!- that I'd like to see! ( Well, um..no- Actually I wouldn't.

Come on now folks, don't be passive about your heatsinks...the answer to this one is just as Peter, Paul, and Mary once said, 'It's blowing in the wind!' :D
What do they call a Finish person who's really into active cooling solutions? Of course, a Fanatic! :D Just a little turbulent humor whilst we wait for more replies!
Someone who likes sweatshirts with hoods? Ah, but of course...a hood fan!
This poll? You got it, Fantastic!
Oh, and someone who cools with just a heatsink? Someone who is fancy-free!
I know I'll blow you over with this one! How about someone who is a fan of fans? How about a fan fancier?!
Or, someone who is the present recipient of downwind activities? Would that be heir current?!...:p  :D

HeHe...See your up to my ol' trick buddy.
Never hurts to get a possibly forgotten poll up to the top of the list for one last shot huh? :D
And I don't blame you...It's a great poll.
Hey! I voted to be in the "cool" club. Common folks! Are you cool or not??? :p
And now, my friend, be sure to check out my "one for the books" post I'm about to put in after hours!

Whyzman , you slay me. :D Always a comedian. I used to be the comedian around here, but that was a long time ago, before college degrees and CPA exams.
Anyways, I have been doing basically the same durn thing that TT contraption does but with a gutted out 80mm fan shell between the AX-7 and 53cfm Mechatronics fan on my 1900+. Dead spots are bad and this way of dealing with them is quite effective. I fell in your 30-39 category for idle temps with no more than 42C load in an ambient room temp of 23C. Wasn't quite sure which level you were asking about.
Now for something completely different. I'm upgrading folks!! Yep, hard to imagine ain't it? :D
This weekend is the big swap. I have a bright shiny new Asus A7N8X Deluxe and AXP 2400+ just sitting there waiting to come alive! Can't wait to see the benefits of the NF2 chipset.
My existing KT3 Ultra and AXP 1900+ will go in the wife's machine and then her K7T266 Pro2 and 1.33 TBirdy 266 will be used to build a system for a co-worker's kid.
Got lots of tinkering to do! Oh yeah! :D

I would be happy to chime in with my temps, but my HP doesn't have sensors set up. I was able to get a system temp (about 35C) with MBM5, but I am not sure how accurate that is. If gives my CPU as "-49C" which would be extremely impressive if it were true!!!:D
BigBlue66
02-13-2003, 12:25 PM
Budfred , I will assume you ran the System Info utility for MBM5 to see which sensors you have and then went to their website to match them up?
On boards I have used that don't have any built-in sensors, I use a thermal monitoring device such as those you see that fit in a 5 1/4" bay. Lots of different ones out now. The latest edition to my case was a LianLi T3 with two thermistors. I use one to monitor true case temps and the other for GPU temps.
I have also in the past used one thermistor to get CPU temps. On an AMD chip, the rubber pads on the four corners provide just enough room to slide a flat thermistor under the heatsink with the tip of it just touching the core. I use plain ole electrical tape to tape the thermistor down to the die. Works very well and you get true temps that way.
HPs are notorious for their lack of temp moitoring...one of the sad things is that the sensors are already on the board, but there is no code in the BIOS to enable/read them (HP uses Phoenix BIOS, which is modular, meaning you can add features by including the particular module for that feature).
In order to use the HP sensors, one must find a program that is able to directly and correctly read/interpret the data output. MBM5 may do that correctly for some HP models, but the developer of it is more interested in doing so for the most motherboards, not spending time working out the idosyncracies of the HP boards....His advice: If you have an HP try MBM5, if it works, even partially, then you got lucky, if it doesn't then try some updates, because other people do contribute to MBM5s delevopment and some of them may add HP data.
So, Budfred, it may be possible that your temp is "real", but it could also just as easily be from some other sensor and not be the one you think it is........

Hey BigBlue ,
Have fun with that new project. I think you're going to like that new board. I love mine.
I have saphalline tracking me down a set of the new Corsair Twinx PC3200 modules from Newegg to go with it. Matched pair with preset factory timings of 2-2-2-6-T1. Just wish Corsair was more prevalent here or that Newegg would ship here.
Anyway, nice choice for the new rig.
Whyzman , here are my temps in a 23 degree room after surfing for an hour or so :

malcore,
How are you cooling that you get those temps????
BigBlue,
I haven't bothered to mess with the HP because I am planning to transition to my P4 build and use the HP as a backup. I just need to find the time one of these weekends to install the rest of the drives and fans......

I don't have anything elaborate going here for cooling.
I use a CoolerMaster all copper heatsink, which I lapped and used a small amount of ArcticSilver 3 on. I have a YS Tech TMD fan (5000rpm, but quiet), all in a LianLi case with two bottom front intake fans(2500 rpm), a rear exhaust (3000 rpm), and a top exhaust (2500 rpm). The cpu fan is 70 mm and the rest are 80mm.

Wow WYZMN! Look! Your plan worked....Looks like you drummed up 4 more votes, maybe more to come. ;)

I know jabar...a shameless use of humor lest the thread be forgotten! Yep, it did work...hehe!
And, then there's the lastest gridiron phenomenon...fantasy football....
BB, the link you provided...have you done any business with them before?
BigBlue66
02-14-2003, 11:08 AM
Whyz , Yes I have done lots of business with those guys. They have the cheapest prices I've seen on the net, even lower than Newegg and Bestbyte.
They have had their problems though. Their reseller ratings are probably skewed by the fact that they were overloaded and didn't have the help to handle it. I think they have straightened out their act quite a bit in the last couple of months.
I just placed an order yesterday and they have shipped it already.
Warning though, they are one of those sites that if your billing and shipping addresses don't match, they will hold the order until you do something about it. Newegg has no problem taking my personal CC and then shipping to my work address. Wish SVC would do the same.
Anyways, yeah I've dealt with SCV for over a year now and really only had two problems with all the orders I placed.
Budfred
02-14-2003, 08:19 PM
As I said in the other thread, I had a lot of trouble with them and they never made an effort to respond to my concerns. They do have great prices, but when they send you the wrong order and won't work it out, good prices aren't worth the hassle. I have had several orders with Newegg now and each one has gone smoothly all the way.

Yoda...seems the thermaltake cowls are in...at least one place:
http://phamcomputer.safeshopper.com/35/671.htm?584
Seems strange that this thread with over 400 views has only 24 votes! What's up with that??
In a recent thread, malcore came up with this:
http://www.directron.com/whisperkit.html
I cannot quite figure out if the thing is utilizing two fans??? One on the intake and one on the heatsink???
Lots of confusion this early morn. However, you know the old adage? Confusion says, "Man with too many fans will get case of heat exhaustion!" Or, "When it comes to a case of computers, a cool dude is a man who is living in a fantasy world!"

Newegg has them too. Just do a search for A1442 I just ordered one. I also noticed on the Thermaltake site they had air blowing INTO the heatsink despite their directions and factory installed fan pulling air out of the heatsink.

On the subject of Cowels.
I know that nobody here is interested but I was born with one, and since the mid-wife took it of folks round about here will tell you that I am a wee bit hot headed. So yes having a cowel on would be benificial.
Ps. My average temp is between 47-50 depending.

Here's another one. Comes in 60, 70, and 80mm fan sizes.
