I cannot load Windows 98 ME on my computer. There is a lot of history behind this, but the problem right now is that when I get to the Windows 98 setup program, it stops with an error that reads, "SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module KRNL.EXE at 0001:3391". I can go no further with the installation. I have tried this on two hard drives, both with the same result.
Now for the history in the hopes that someone much smarter than myself can help me ID the problem. I am running an ASUS A7V motherboard with a Athlon TBird 900MHz, 512MB RAM, and up until now had two Western Digital HDs, one 40 and one 20 GB with the 40 as master and 20 as slave.
I started to experience apparently random symptoms of a problem about a month ago, ranging from my internet connection being disrupted, to an inability to install a game patch (hung up half way), which graduated to things like my floppy drive hanging up, the computer locking up, etc. I formatted my hard drives, updated and flashed the BIOS to a newer version, and attempted to reinstall Windows, but have not been able to do that. First I kept getting no CD support from my bootup disk. Then I finally got one of the drives to load Win 98, seemed to be on my way, updated and installed the drivers for my Diamond Viper 770 video card and that was it...I started to get the message "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." And I could not go any further than that. So now I've reformatted one of the drives, flashed the BIOS again, and when I try to reinstall Windows I get the above listed General Protection Fault.
I could really use some help or some leads -- I didn't think you could break down a computer any more than flashing the BIOS and formatting the hard drive. Is there any more I can do to "start from scratch"? Can this be traced to a component or specific area? Thanks very much to anyone who can help and responds to my crisis.
