Hello! I've been wondering about this for a while: What do you really need to close when you install something? Some programs say "all open applications". Others say "all Windows programs". Exactly what? Just disable Norton Anti-virus and the task scheduler and whatever is in the system tray? Or everything in your startup folder? (And if you don't have jv16 Power Tools, how do you even find your startup folder?) Or more than that?
Thank you!

This is more critical with some apps than others but it is a good policy to at least close all running/active windows. Pressing ALT and then pressing/releasing TAB will allow you to scroll through the ones that are active; close all the others except the one you are using to install from.
To close down even more apps then CTRL+ALT+DEL will allow you to close down all running tasks one by one (but leave explorer and systray).
Another approach is to run msconfig and then reboot without any programs being started.
Don't know which OS you are using but if you can see the Start button you should be able to get to the startup folder. If your install program has taken up the whole screen then RClicking will usually give you options to minimise or close the full screen.

To tell the truth...
I don't shut down anything in particular. I've never had a problem.

I have had problems when I have left antivirus programs running. I try to install in Safe Mode if it is any kind of substantial program so I have minimal interference from any programs.
