I had a fit of a time the other day fitting a PCI Video card into a 7 year old motherboard, everything lined up but the force I needed to set it was absurd. I think the slot was corroded. Is there somthing you can use like silicon to make this kind of force not be an issue. Yes it was a PCI Slot and it was A PCI card [not APG]
Were the widths of the slots less 7 yrs ago ??????? or the cards slimer ??????? It might be like I said corrosion.
Thanks

I would try blowing the slot out with a can of air rather than lubricating it. If you are willing to take a risk, you could probably very carefully wipe it out with high percentage alcohol and even try a very fine abrasive, then blow it out carefully. It is possible there is some corrosion, but the cure may be worse than the problem.
I would wait for other opinions before trying the abrasive, I've never done it and it might be a very bad thing......
If you do anything other than blowing it out, make sure the board is not getting any power.
You can give them a shot of electronics contact cleaner (use one marked safe for computers), but stay away from anything like WD40 or some other kind of lubricant.

If you have a radioshack or electronics store close pick up a (pen) Deoxit (for oxidation..) for the card and a can of ProGold for the board contacts this comes in spray or a pen if you can't find it an Eraser will do(pencil) but make sure you clean the eraser dust throughly
