Memory has decreased...

...this is the message I get when my computer is idle for a while. This started a couple of days ago and has never happened before. When I select 'reboot', it boots up fine but it only sees 16 MB RAM. I have 48 MB RAM in my system. What's up with that? If I hard boot, it'll see the full 48 MB.

I have a Packard Bell Multimedia M400, 166 mhz. I haven't a clue as to why this is happening.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had this problem with a laptop, ended up having the motherboard replaced.
Prior to having the MB replaced I found that cleaning the memory stick's contacts with an eraser helped for awhile.
