Hi Guys My Daughter and I have the same problem with our PC`s ie. Will not scan or defrag. I had this problem last year and it partially resolved it`s self, and now it has reappeared big time. If the computer is switched off without closeing correctly then switch on again the start up begins with a message that the computer will do a scan disk because it was not closed down correctly and does so without any problem. Any help will be appreciated.
When the computer is not properly shut down, ScanDisk will run in the DOS mode during startup, which is different than when it's running in Windows.
Go to Start/Run, type msinfo32, click OK/Tools/System File Checker, check 'Extract one file....', type scandskw.exe in the box, click Start, type X:\Win98 in the 'Restore from' box (where X is your CD-ROM drive's letter), type C:\Windows in the 'Save File in' box, insert the Windows installation CD, click OK.
That file will be retrieved from the CD, and will overwrite the existing file.
Then, do the same for defrag.exe.
If that does not work, then start in Safe mode, and run ScanDisk and Defrag from there.

I don't get what you mean sounds like it is working to me...If you do a hard shut down this is exactly what it is supposed to do automatically run scan disk for bad sectors... so is it or is it not completeing scan disk????
If it's not running correctly try this troublre shooting
1. Restart to the Command Prompt and do a thorough Scandisk
on the drive first and repair any errors.
Restart the computer. Hold down the CTRL key while the system is
booting. This will take you to the Boot Menu then select Command
Prompt Only. Do a thorough Scandisk on the drive from there by
typing SCANDISK then press enter.
2. Close all running programs using Close Programs (Ctrl + Alt + Del)
except Explorer and Systray.
3. Turn off screen savers and any power management
4. Delete Temp files and Temporary Internet Files
5. Empty the Recycle Bin
6. Do a virus scan with up to date virus software
7. Disable PC-Cillin if installed or AV
8. Turn off and disconnect DSL/Cable Modem if you use this type
Note: Defragging in Safe Mode is another option.
