Got a dsl modem recently and when I put in the network card and installed the drivers my computer started to take 3min 45 sec to load up. My computer was booting up at 35seconds before and dont see why a network cad would slow down my computer.
I have win98
more then enough ram
I started out with a dlink 528 but switched it to a dlink 530tx still nothing changed. Isp has walked me through everything but persoanlly I think they are stupid.
I have edited my startup menu under msconfig. (maybe one of the things I took off startup could be effecting this but I do not see any that relate to this).
Any ideas thanks

I'm not sure of the details GH or one of the other network gurus will have to administer that punishment...I mean knowledge http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I also know squat about DSL...anyways...It has something to do with the NIC searching for it's settings or maybe it was IP address. Is your IP addy static, dynamic or free-willing (assigned by ISP).
When I built my system I was getting long boot times as well until I disable the NIC (was using a dial up then)...seriously cut boot time down.

You're absolutely correct adam that it should not take that long to boot just by adding a network card( no diff than adding any pci hardware ). Have you tried moving it to a different slot? could be cuasing an IRQ conflict, it's possible that you have multiple instance of the NIC card-boot into safe mode and go into your system properties, you should see only 1 network adapter, any others that you see you should remove them.
Post back and let us know if this helped any.

I'd add to check the bios. Many motherboards have a setting for quick post. If its just windows loading slow, then I'd quess IRQ conflicts.

ok I manually switched the cards around nothing happened.
I went into bios/cmos and tried to give my network card irq #3 and give my soundcard irq #12 since in my windows resource section it tells me those are both free but when I do this the computer hangs at the post at section plug and play.
Turned off plug and play nothing changes other then that it lists more stuff at post. In bios set secondary boot up device to diasbled nothing changed.
My network card is sharing an irq with ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering wicjh is under irq 4.
I tried to change my soundcard one too since it is under irq 11 with 2 usb ones and pci irq a steering one which i feel is to many devices sharing one irq but they will not change.
like i said earlier irq 3 and 12 are both free.

It is the NIC.
The same thing happened to me when I installed the NIC. Win 98 takes forever to boot because of the NIC serching for network setting. If you install it in a PC with Win2000 or MI the booting time doesn't change, but the network setting takes a while.
