I recently did a complete re-format on a Micron 100mghz Pentium with 48 meg ram and a 28 kbps modem. I reinstalled Windows 95se (it really sped up the computer after removing 6 years of old dlls etc.) I tried to upgrade the IE 3.0 that came with the Windows install but when it tried to install the program for IE 5.0 an error message came up saying it couldn't install the programs and the network was busy. I later tried to upgrade to IE 4.0 first but it gave a bunch of error messages that it couldn't install alot of the files etc. I installed Navigator 4.7 and it installed fine but when I tried to connect to the internet, the modem dials out, gets that modem squaking noise and then it says it can't connect to the server which I know works because my other computer can connect just fine. I have installed DUN 1.3 and checked TCP/IP etc., done the modem check and they all work fine.

Two questions, Why can't I install IE 4.0 or 5.0 and why can't my computer connect to the internet? It worked fine before the reformat etc. Any help would be appreciated. I hope this is the right forum to ask. You have helped me solve all my other questions, thanks.

I can't help you with the IE problem.
But I have had the same thing happen to me with the dialup connection .
In my case I had forgotten to use network properties to install the tcp/ip protocol.

To check this, Open the network properties from the Network icon on the desktop or from control panel.
You should see Client for Microsoft Network, your modem, and the TCP/IP all listed.
Along with any others you have installed to include File and Printer sharing.

I have found that you can set the TCP/IP in your dial-up settings without the protocol even being installed. It doesn't check for the it in the network.

To install the modem and or protocol Just use the ADD button .

Thanks for the advice, I did reinstall TCP/IP but it still would not connect but it said it could not makea Dial Up Connection so I reinstalled MSDUN 1.3 and IT CONNECTED!! It may have needed both, regardless I am online again. I still have to figure out why I can't upgrade to IE 4.0 or higher. Once again. Thanks
