My pc has started acting realy strange, first after being connected to the net for a while it would freeze, only allowing me to use the start menu, but not letting me close the progs,I would have to alt, ctr, del to get back to my desktop. It has now started to take control of the slider bar when I try to stop the hung progs, also my desktop icons have started to flash like Disco lights and when I click on any of them I get the re-cycle bin up asking if I want to dump it.And if thats not enough on one occasion when I tried to type in the address box the first letter would just repeat forever.I am running w98 on a p3,I have installed an evalution McAfee virus
prog but it hasn`t found anything. Please please Help.Thank`s.
Tom.

Well those are unusual things going on so you might very well have some sort of bug. Is the evalation program full and up to date? Even if it is maybe it's a bug that hasn't been detected yet. You might want to make sure you have your vital data backed up and also be aware that that data might also be infected.

Do you have active desktop?
If you do what version of Internet explorer are you using?

I do have active desktop, one of the symptoms is,when I can alt ctr delete a frozen program I am asked if I want to restore active desktop and when I do some of the program icons like internet and a few others vanish from the programs running bar, and my pc seems very slow.
I am not sure wich internet explorer version I have I got it from my isp.
Thank`s.

If you don't need it, you should disable Active desktop.

Do you think active desktop is causing all theese problems and How do I turn it off?.
I have also noticed that my internet connection has become unbearably slow regardless of time of day and even when I switch isp,can a virus cause that.
Do you rekon it is a virus?
Thanks again, Tom.

A trojan program can cause the type of performance slow down your experincing. Most up to date virus scanners should catch them, if you haven't already I would download the latest virus def. for your antivirus program.

To disable the Active Desktop, right-click an empty area on the desktop, choose "Active Desktop", and then click "View As Web Page" to clear the check mark. (if there is no check mark than Active desktop is already disabled)

I managed to de-activate active desktop last night and, so far things seem ok. The thing is I won`t realy be able to tell untill I get my internet access back to normal. The Virus scanner I downloaded is McAfee latest edition evaluation(It`s only $29 or £20 to buy, so I will get it)and as I said it didn`t find anything in scan all files mode.
Since you told me about active desktop I have read up on it a bit and, now have a better understanding on how a virus can attach itself and travel through a system.
If you know of a way to maybe pinpoint a Trojan please let me know.
Many thank`s for all your Help,
Tom.

Go here : http://networkone.tucows.com/window95.html and do a search for "trojan cleaner".

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
