I want to transfer files from one computer(desktop) with win98 to another desktop that has win xp home edition. What kind of cable is required?.Is it true that a printer cable or the like cannot be used for that purpose.

It is possible to set up a direct cable connection between two computers. You need a special cable to connect the serial ports. (a null-modem or "laplink" cable.) Belkin make them, so should be available easily.
In windows XP, if you look in help & support, and search for "direct cable connection" you can see how to set it up.
I haven't used it in XP yet, but it worked quite well in win98 for the odd file transfer from desktop to laptop.
