I formatted my HD, installed Win98, and all went well. But I accidentally left the boot discette in the a: drive when I restarted. Now I can only get an a or c prompt. How do I get Windows to boot again?

Are you getting to these command prompts with no floppy in the drive when you boot-up?

If windows is installed, then typing win at the C: prompt should startup windows - but not sure why it should open directly to the command prompt in the way that dos+win31 used to do; away to do more homework on that. :D

Looks like you need to edit msdos.sys so that BootGUI=1

(GUI=Graphical User Interface)

Typing win or windows didn't work. But in desperation, I hit cont-alt-del, and that rebooted to windows!

I've never been able to boot windows98 by typing win or windows. I think the win command works with windows95 though. Could be right, could be wrong...don't cost anything!

Seems you have to disable DMA first in Win98.

Sorry about that - but it's good to learn at least one new thing each day. ;)

Out of interest Vic - does it work from the C root or from the Windows directory, since win.com is inside Windows or System or System32 - not sure because I don't have easy access to a Win98 system at the mo.

Other reasons why win won't work.

Could be problems with win.com

Or maybe the path isn't set in autoexec.bat
