XP Defragmenter won't run on C

Attempting to run the disk defragmenter on C drive produces an error "the memory at xxxx could not be read", then it quits. Sorry I don't have the exact memory addresses here. Defragmenting other partitions (D, E) works fine. C defragmented fine about a week ago and there's been no installations or system changes since then.

This is Windows XP Homer edition on a PIII 1.2GHx laptop. I think tomorrow C will be introduced to a nice fresh install of Win2K.

Did you try a scandisk (diskcheck for w2k,xp)?

Yup. The XP scandisk reports no error; then booted to a Win98 disk and ran the Win98 scandisk, also no errors.

Win XP -> Win 2000 upgrade successful :) Feels like I had a processor, RAM and HDD upgrade!
