Hi All,

I have a problem with a fatal exception error that comes up every time i boot my machine.

It comes up just as windows is about to get the desktop up and running (before icons/ toolbars appear) basically i have a white desktop and i see the white but nothing else then the blue screen kicks in.

The error is in VXD IFSMGR(01)+000009A2 and 0028:C0033A92.

If i try to continue the pc completely hands with the hard disk light switched on. I can't hear the disk thrashing though.

If i reset the pc runs scan disk and boots normally after this.

Anyone any ideas what could be causing this or is it time for a reformat and reinstall? Feel free to ask further questions and i'll do what i can to answer!

Thanks a lot

John

VXD IFSMGR(01)+000009A2

do you have a Matrox cardwith power desk program trying to run @ boot??

did this just start??

have you added/removed anything??

some others may find the exact error message, I have some ideas for you, but want to know above first.

Hi there

the graphics card is a 16MB RIVA TNT (nothing special!)

I actually reformatted/ reinstalled Windows on Saturday after my nephew who's staying with us atempted to reinstall windows when some dodgy program he downloaded while i was out wouldn't work! (don't ask!) His attempt didn't work so i started from scratch (not for the first time quite used to doing this).

In theory the install should be pretty clean as it hasn't had the months of dodgy coverdisk programs etc loaded up. its just win 98 with virus checker, zone alarm, winproxy,MS Office 2000 and Cubase and Fruityloops.

Man it was so robust for like a year and a half up to this point!

hopefully, you are loading your virus application last.

I would suggest since you already have reformatted that you fdisk and reformat again, loading these other programs **one at a time** to see which one is causing this error.. as I can't find it (others here can I know)

also is this a name brand computer?

sorry not of much help.

Thanks for the attempt anyway!

reason i didn't want to reformat again is that i only did it at the weekend, and you know the first time you do it its not boring in fact its quite exciting, and if you do it once in a while (say every 6 months max) its still an interesting enough process but twice in a week??? i can't face it!

One day i'll crack and buy a copy of a good ghosting software and save a good install for good and all!

cheers

Thanks for that... most feedback i've had from techy mates seems to pint at the network cards so i'll try uninstalling them first... after that its reinstall time.

Thanks for all your help Gents (and ladies if any of you were!)

If I read your post correctly, you have Win98 ver. 1......be sure to install all of the Updates @ the MS Update site ......many of the bugs in version one have been fixed in the Updates for it.
