I have been experiencing lockups after 2-3 hours on a newly assembled PC. These have been fixed by removing the case sides and relocating the PC to a cooler room.... this tells me I need a cooling fan in the case. However, a friend has advised me that I may have messed up when putting on the heatsink supplied with my Pentium III 1GHZ: the instructions did not mention removing any clear protective layer from the top of the thermal strip before latching the heatsink, but there is now a layer of clear goo (like hardened plastic glue) on the CPU surface... could this be causing poor heat transfer? If so, is there any safe way to remove it so the thermal strip makes a better contact with the CPU?
