I completed building a new computer using an ASUS P4PE/GBL/SATA/1394-UAY motherboard with onboard sound w/AC'97 Soundmax audio. With the sound set to max volume with the slide control, the speaker volume is too low. Earphones with adjustable volume connected have sufficient volume. Suggestions? Maybe a driver. I have installed the Soundmax driver using the ASUS driver disk. Have set the volume to max everywhere I can find. No yellow flags are listed under Device Manager. Would appreciate any help. Is there any chance of a problem with the ASUS motherboard? Looking for a solution. ASUS is not responding very quickly. Probably something very minor. I also have a very old 16-bit Plug & Play Sound Card that I considered installing. Would this work with the newer equipment? It is very old. WolfpackRon

I'm curious, which OS?
Amplified speakers? Are you sure you're plugged into the line-out?
You've been into Sound Properties and checked to see if mute buttons are ticked? I would uncheck all but microphone....

I just received an e-mail from ASUSTEK telling me to return my motherboard to Newegg.com. One problem was the sound problem. Another problem was an error message on startup when the fan signal connectors were hooked up to the motherboard. I guess I eat the price of shipping.

It took two or three days to hear from ASUS by e-mail, but I guess that is a good thing. A bad thing is that I have to put the computer back together again. After I take it apart. I guess I get to build two computers for the price of one. Will Newegg.com cross ship the motherboard? Will they check the one I return? They are inpossible to talk with on the phone. The RMA is even automated. I guess that is a good thing. I kinda enjoy fooling with this stuff. I may as well anyway. WolfpackRon.

Newegg will probably check the one you ship back. They are usually unusually available to talk to on the phone, I am surprized that you had trouble with that. I am not sure if they will cross ship, but people say they are real good about RMAs.

Even though they may test it...the ace up your sleeve is that ASUS Tech told you to RMA the board. I would include a hard copy of the email along with the return...as well as pointing it out to the person you will be talking with regarding your RMA number...Ask them to note that on your RMA request...

Whyzman said "Amplified Speakers?", but I did not comprehend what he was asking. Even though I thought about amplified speakers, I did not consider that to be the solution to my sound problem mentioned above since both sets of speakers worked fine with my old HP computer. After installing the second motherboard and encountering the same problem, the ASUS Tech person finally did his job and asked about the two sets of speakers I tried with this new computer. One set was amplified, but I had not been using the AC connector and they worked fine with the HP computer, but not my new build. That solved my problem. As I said also earlier, it was probably a simple solution. But why does it work with the HP? The ASUS tech guy also helped with the fan signal error message on startup. The solution was to disable the fan reading in BIOS. WolfpackRon.

My guess is that the HP probably has some sort of on-board amplifier...
Probably not of the "earth shaking" variety...probably just enough to hear "You've got Mail!" :D

Sounds reasonable. Caused a lot of problems though. I learn on the run I guess. Thanks. WolfpackRon.
