My system is not seeing my mouse. The mouse just stopped working for no apparent reason. When I rebooted I got a message right after the puter reads the hard drives.. before windows ever thinks about starting. The message reads "mouse error or mouse not present". I have a ps2 and I have already tried a serial mouse and a different ps2. Now the humorous part.. its a Packard Bell... When you finally quit laughing I could sure use some good advice. And I dont mean references to the quality of PB. Am I totally fried? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif

Can you boot into safe mode by holding down the Ctrl key while booting? If so you may be able to remove the mouse from the Device Mananger and re-boot. Maybe try going into your BIOS to see if something is amiss there concerning the PS2 or mouse settings (if any).

Well, I can't really slam Packard Bell too bad, my old P-60 with win3.11 has been excellent...then again I've heard lots of horror stories about them...

However...I guess a few questions are in order. Was anything installed before this happened? Hardware or software? Drivers? Modem? Any thunderstorms or power surges? Is the cord plugged in securely? Does the mouse have a switch on bottom to select serial or PS/2 that's been changed?

Check BIOS, you should have a PS/2 mouse option, I think in Integrated Periferals. It should be enabled.

What's the OS? If you're running win95 or 98 you can boot into Safe Mode, remove it from Device Manager and reboot, it should find and reinstall it, and might ask for a driver disk.

If it's win3.11 the drivers are loaded in DOS before windows starts. You would have to have a look at the autoexec.bat or config.sys file, whichever loads the mouse driver, and make sure the command line is correct, and possibly replace the driver files by copying them into the existing folder, in case of corrupt files.

You might also need to consider the possibility that lightning or a power surge has damaged the PS/2 port, and it simply won't work any more. All is not lost, PS/2 cards can be found, but it might take some looking, they're very obsolete these days...

And try yur original mouse on another machine, to make sure it works, it's also possible the ones you used trying to troubleshoot it might not work with the existing drivers.
