Hello guys and girls,

The problem is that a friend of mine cannot acces the internet and I have looked at it, but I couldn't find the problem. I have deleted the modem and installed it again. I did this because the computer didn't detect the modem and said that the modem was probably installed wrong. I solved this problem but still I could not acces the internet. Then the computer kept on saying that he couldn't get a carrier signal(this is free translated from Dutch to English) from the modem. The strange thing about it is that my friend his computer was working o.k. when he was using it at his own place, but when he moved it to his parents house he couldn't acces the internet anymore. I have looked at the phonenumbers, DNS number, type of modem, checked the phonecable, tried another provider(compuserve) and still it doesn't work.

If someone can help me with this problem I would be very thankful.

And sorry for the bad English writing.

JoJo

What type of connection is it? I unplugged my computer for a bad storm before and when powered up it lost all its TCP/IP settings. Check your dial up properties and its settings to start.

It could well be that his parents phone line is "dirty" and a connection cant be made due to the background sounds in the line. The only way to know for sure is to take it to someone's house that CAN connect and try it there.

1. TEST THE MODEM:

Start->settings->Control Panel->Modems->diagnostics->Highlight port->click more info and you can tell if the modem will repsond to the computer.

2. SEE IF YOU CAN GET A DIALTONE WITH THE MODEM:

Start->Programs->Accessories->Hyperterminal->Hypertrm.exe
Follow the prompts and enter a phone number of a nearby phone (a different line of course if there is a second line) and click connect. The other phone should ring. You should at lest here the modem dial and the phone ring through the modem speaker.

If you pass 1 and 2 then the problem is in the connecting device or in the phone line.

Another thing you can do is see if you can fax from the computer. If you have fax software installed.

that's a neat suggestion classic, usually i just plug another phone into the back of the modem and see if i can get a connection to the phone thru the modem-if you get a dial tone that usually means the modems ok. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Ok, I know this may be a bit lame, but here goes anyway, does your friends parents house use a PABX phone system? do you need to dial zero to get an outside line before dialing through that outlet?

Just a thought.

This may sound kinda odd. But maybe the line connecting the computer to your phone (or phonejack) is faulty, especially if it's an old one. It has happened to me many many years ago and when I decided buy a new one, it finally worked. And as a matter of fact, it happened to my father a month ago.
