Hello pinkcrush,

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

A quick place to check would be to right-click on My Computer on your Desktop...slide down to Properties. Click on Device Manager and check the Display Adapters...see what's listed there...

If it's onboard video go to either the mobo's site or the proprietary system's site (Dell, Gateway etc.) to look for the right drivers. If it is a video card you'll need to get some info off from it and got to Driverguide.com or something similar to look for drivers there.

If you get us the info we can try to find them for you.

I just posted on your other question with info on your motherboard. It appears to have an AGP slot so you must have a video card that we'll need to get the info off from.

If you are online with it, you could download Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/Programs/Crucial/advisor.exe) and it will tell us in the report what the video card is.

Download it, put it on a floppy and put it in the 16 color pc. Then report the 'report' back.

If the computer has onboard video, the monitor cable will plug into a connector on the back that is integrated with the same connectors as the mouse, keyboard, USB and so on. If it is a card, it will plug into a slot. If it is a card, open the computer and write down anything you find printed on the card and post it here. If it is onboard, post whatever info you have about the computer itself or open the case and write down anything printed on the motherboard and post it here. We can help you find the drivers if you can tell us what you have.

I thought this was the Elitegroup mobo. I see it's an older model. You'll have to open it up and get some info from the graphics card and D/L the drivers for it. Post what you can find for what looks like model numbers or letters on the larger chips on the video card.

You'll see a chip with something like Crystal or Gento or Rockwell or similar and get the numbers beneath that.

Hopefully someone will take over helping you, I just got called out to work...(I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go... again!)

Ok, it sounds like a pretty old system, so it is unlikely we will be able to find the driver without more info. On the other hand, I would be surprized if Win98 didn't already have the best driver for it. Have you checked Desktop Properties to make sure it is set for the best resolution the current driver will allow?

To do this, Right click on the desktop and select Properties. In the Window that opens pick the Settings tab and see what options are available. If the one you need isn't there, you might want to check in Advanced to see if you can set it higher manually. Let us know what you find.

it is, but ive checked i cant change the resolution or the colours, they are all updated drivers and i dont know how to change it manually,

Budfred

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by "they are all updated drivers". Do you mean when you click on Advanced or are you talking about Hardware wizard or.....?

You probably will need to open the case again and write down ANY numbers, words or other info you can find on the motherboard or the inside of the case. Sometimes cases will have a diagram with some info about the motherboard pasted on the inside of the case, so be sure to look there as well. Those old Cyrix boards are pretty limited, but it should be able to do better than 16 colors.

Are you saying that after you installed the driver it shut down on you?

Please be more detailed about the error message if that is what is happening.

I'm glad to hear you found the driver.

You might want to try booting into SAFEMODE and see if the BSOD disappears. If an attempt to boot into SAFEMODE is successful then it would appear that there is a problem with the Video Driver.

This could be a corrupt d/l of the driver, or an inappropriate driver for the video chip.

However, it it loads with the Standard VGA driver it would seem the new driver to be the culprit. :(

pinkcrush

so yes it loads ok in safe but i cant tell its got more colours,so il agree with you its the driver,so do i try downloading it again or just give up ive already tryed un doing it a re instale but that didnt help.so what next

I'm just not sure that the driver you have is the correct driver. I'm having difficulty figuring out on the SIS site which driver you are actually getting.

I'm going to do a bit of searching and see just what exactly the SIS chip you have is all about...I'm not sure right now that it is the Video Chip...

If we could find the Motherboard manufacturer we can analyze it a bit better...

pinkcrush
03-09-2003, 12:21 PM
right i downloaded the 5598_113_win_98 thats the one it tells you to do for graphics.

We make chipsets for Mainboard/VGA cards and never manufature these boards or cards.Retail manufacturer often customize SiS's chipset hardware and software for their particular system or configuration, so drivers on this site may not work with your system.

As their disclaimer states...they make the chips, but each MB manufacturer can alter their comprehensive system to their own needs...thus the "base" SIS drivers might not work with your MB.

You could have the correct driver...it might just be the order of installation...

I would suggest that we nail down the MotherBoard manufacturer...

ok but any idears how,cos i dont

When you first boot up there is what is called a "BIOS string" displayed, normally in the lower left corner of the screen. You can usually hit the Pause/Break button to freeze this screen and copy down the BIOS string numbers.

If you'd report that back I think we can locate the MB manufacturer...

Does any of this seem familiar?

Whyzman

The BIOS string will look like this:

51-0102-zz5123-00111111-101094-AMIS123-P

Power down and remove the Keyboard...reboot and you should get an error message...Look then in the lower Left and copy the complete number down.

Hmmmm....I'm not finding anything right off...

It does appear to be an AMI BIOS...

You might want to try this:

Hang on...it looks like it's an AWARD BIOS...

I might have a line on it...Be right back

Ok, it looks like the key in the BIOS string is the 2a5IIg3a which takes us to www.dtk.com.tw

They have a cross reference there for the PAM-0070S-EO

You can find the Manual and Driver locations...

Looks like something [hardware] cannot cope with that configuration change.

To jump back to the previous [working] configuration, [so your PC will boot] use "scanreg /restore" at a DOS command prompt [using your Startup Disk].
Select the backup taken on the first successful boot on the day you made the configuration change that caused the problem.
