Ive used my cd burner several times before and its worked really well, I know its not the station theres anything wrong with, but something IS definately wrong. After I formatted my computer and went back from XP to ME, everytime I put a CD in the burner it cuts to a bluescreen error message. Ive used the burner before on ME, and I have used the recovery disks that came with my computer, allthough I did get 2-3 error in the recovery prosess.

How should I go about to fix this problem. Ive been in the control panel - System, and checked it out, and it says that the device is working properly and dosent need any drivers to function. Does anyone have an idea what this could be?

The burner is a HP CD-writer plus by the way....if it matters.

Do you have a burner software program running background by any chance? If you have one of the default Roxio programs running, it could be faulting when you open the drive and try to run the disk, causing the crash....

Nope, I have no burner related software at all on my computer, apart from MusicMatch Jukebox. But I tried inserting an empty disc into the CD burner without any programs open, right after I had restarted my computer and the same bluescreen error occoured.

If you did a clean install of WinME, you may have software running that you don't know about. I would check in Task Manager and msconfig to make sure you don't have any of the Roxio stuff that MS was distributing with ME.

Okay, this may be a stupid question, but I know that XP has a CD writer program that comes with XP...but ME wouldn't, would it? Don't you have to have some kind of burner software to make the CD writer work? Or is Music Match software that will work with all CD writers? I don't burn music, and have limited experience..but neither of my CD writers will work without the associated software..Sony in one case, and Nero in another.

MM Jukebox includes "generic" (generic as in working with all drives)burning capabilities, specifically tweaked for making music disks.

Also the full retail versions of most burning software are drive independant.z

I was thinking that my copy of WinME came with basic Roxio software which I removed, but I may be wrong. That may have been part of the HP Restore disk that came with my HP.

My uncle's ME puter..HP..came with a HP burner and suspect that's what you're thinking of, Budfred, because all he got with his fancy new puter was the Restore disk. But, your question is still valid because doesn't ME have some problems running the Restore stuff in the background while running other apps? Causing sluggish behavior and such?

clyro : I think the "Blue Screen of Death" scares even the most advanced users..at least, a little!...but did you write down what the BSOD says?? I'd be glad to "look" but need a starting point.

Oh, and thanks, mjc for info. Will remember..I knew that about burner software, but not about Jukebox.

Kay,

No, my HP didn't come with a burner. I installed a TDK and it had Nero software. Something I installed, either WinME or the Restore disk had a basic version of the Roxio software that I had to remove and avoid installing on later reinstalls. Either way, it sounds like I am on the wrong track for this problem....

Well, I fixed it, it was actually done in three easy steps:

Step 1: Format the computer

Step 2: Install Windows XP

Step 3: Sit back and watch in amazement as the damn thing actually works.

So the conclusion is that WinME is a load of crap infested with bugs and other horrible things. Thank God for XP :)
