I just downloaded and install the new MailWasher Pro. This is a version that will cost money for full function, but if you are already registered, you get this and future updates for free. It seems pretty classy. It has the same functionality of the old version, but also has a preview pane and a tabbed frame for viewing "friends", "blacklist" and "filters". So far I like it. The owner is calling the company Firetrust now, so the new address is www.firetrust.com

The owner says he will still have a free version available, but this is the version that he will continue to develop and support.

I'd like to hear what other MailWasher fans think....

For those that don't know, MailWasher screens your email and lets you delete it off the server if it is SPAM, infected or other garbage.

I played with the pro version today. Out of 24 spam message I received, MailWasher tagged 15 of them as possible or probable spam (~63%).

Twenty of them were in mail accounts on which I run Spamassassin on the server. Spamassassin correctly tagged 16/20 as spam (80%).

Yes, it's a small sample. But I don't really see much in MW to pay money for. Over the past three weeks I've developed quite a few rules for nPoP (164kb of lean, mean, free programming) to augment Spamassassin. Over the past four days Spamassassin & nPoP together have correctly labelled 100% of the spam I've received. This little war has gotten to be so much fun I now look forward to receiving spam :)

The free version of MW is limited to a single account. Pity.

I don't particularly notice whether MailWasher correctly tags SPAM as SPAM, I just use the titles to figure what is SPAM, blacklist and bounce it. I believe you can add to the MailWasher filters if you want to increase the hit rate, but I have been using it a long time (in addition to being very careful about where I list my email address) so I rarely get more than 2 SPAM in a day and sometimes get none.

Hi guys,
I use Mailwasher also but what I would like to know is if it's possible to prevent this same spam and junk that I blacklist and bounce from coming back to me at all. I still get tons of it coming through my Mailwasher, the only difference is that the check marks are already there instead of me having to put them there. Thanks! :)

Unless your ISP institutes filtering on what arrives to their servers, no it will still get delivered to you.

Ah, okay then...was curious cuz I wasn't sure if I had MailWasher set up right or what but now I know. Thanks mjc. :)

When it bounces, some SPAMmers will remove you from their lists because it says you have a dead email address. However, SPAMmers are not known for being overly fastidious about their housekeeping, so they probably don't clean out the bad addresses very often. I only get SPAM on one of my email addresses and I figure if I ever have to spend more than a minute or so cleaning it out of my mailbox, I will close it and open another....

Thank-you Budfred, I understand. I need to do just that I think, open a new account with my ISP and keep it only for personal emails, no greeting cards or email that directs me to a site cuz that's when my inbox began getting spammed. It's ridiculous how much of this junk one gets in a run of a day. Best place to receive that stuff would probably be web-based email accounts, I think. You'll eventually get it there anyway if ya wait long enough. :(

If you don't give out your email address at all, you generally won't get any SPAM. I don't get any SPAM on the address I am on right now, but I use my other address on eBay, so I do get some there. I even started getting some porn SPAM after I blocked a buyer that took about 2 months to pay for an item, what a coincidence...
