I’m confused.
Is this a hypertext link to a webpage?
Or is it a shortcut/link to a file on your PC?
You need to lay it out plain for us to see. [That’s a metaphor]

the page just freezes and nothing happens

Is this a true freeze or just the display of a "blank" page? These sort of problems with links are not uncommon after upgrading to IE6. One of the fixes is to run regsvr32 urlmon.dll from the run box.

There are five more dlls that it may also be necessary to do the same thing with:-
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Also - have you emptied your cache lately??

yes it's a hypertext link to a webpage.

using: http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;255867 as an example, the webpage should load/open up a separate new webpage showing information right, but the webpage in question doesn't seem to load, all it does is open and the webpage freezes and dont show information or pic. If i copy and paste the link it opens fine.

whats going on?

yeah i cleaned the cache a last week.

do you think it had something to do with it??

Cleaning the cache is generally a suggestion to help it run better, so that is probably not the problem.

The other thing I would do is run security software to make sure you don't have anything in the background messing with your system. Spyware, virus and trojan scans....

the link on the right after clicking on http://www.support... doesn't seem to load, it just hangs. it attempts to load but nothing happens though.

also when i ran the 6 dll files it succeeded, except for the, regsvr32 Shell32.dll one. the following message appeared.

Well it seems to be fairly obviously a software problem and I’d put a registry problem at the top of the list.
There’s something amiss with the registry arrangements for responding to a click on a hypertext link.

SOLUTIONS
1. Use “scanreg /restore” to jump back to an earlier set of registry and “.ini” files that were backed up before the problem was introduced. And if that doesn’t fix it, then:
2. Reformat the c: drive and restore a backup taken before the introduction of the problem. If that doesn’t work, then:
3. Reformat the c: drive and re-install Windows etc. If that doesn’t fix it, then:
4. Re-partition, then reformat the c: drive and re-install Windows etc.

Some thoughts and a couple of links at http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_win98&message.id=35032&highlight=

These "IE6-upgrade bugs" are usually caused by having .dlls installed by the upgrade, which are incompatibe with the earlier versions installed by the OS. Since these cascade and call on each other they all need to be compatible versions of the "same" files - rather than registry corruption per se.

If using regsvr32 doesn't fix them then often only a reinstall of the OS or removal of IE6 using IEradicator followed by a reinstallation of IE will do the trick. The Repair IE (from add/remove) seldom seems to work.

My fortnightly copy of “Computer Active” arrived today and there on the “Readers to the Rescue” page was someone who had this problem.

QUOTE
“I am using Windows 98SE and Outlook Express 6.
When I receive an email with a website link, Internet Explorer doesn’t start when I click it.
Instead I have to paste it into Explorer.”

1st ANSWER
“I had this problem and also found that links within websites did not work.
I backtracked the problem and to the installation Pop-Up Stopper.
Once I uninstalled the software, I had no more problems.”

2nd ANSWER
"I resolved this problem by clicking on Options in Outlook Express' Tools Menu, clicking on the Connections tab and unchecking the "Hang up after sending or receiving" box. I clicked ok to aply the settings."

http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/how-to/support/win95/msiexpl.html

.. or it is worth looking through any utility/installation CDROMs you may have around (like those provided by ISPs etc) since IE5 may well be on one of them.

Your's and Sylvander's don't match. His link works.

To reformat:

Back up all files you want to keep.

Have all your CD's ready to reload with (Windows, Office apps, antivirus, firewall etc).

Prepare a boot disk (floppy). Put your W98 CD in CDROM, go to add/remove software on the CD and to create startup disk. Use a formatted floppy and make one. Then write protect it!!!!

If you have a second pc to access this site, we could have you all reformatted and 'basically' (you may need to add more things later) running again in a couple hours, aside from the backups you may want to do first.

My first time was with the generous help from the members here that I've so grown to appreciate. :)

I'd be glad to walk you through it if interested, I did it over the phone for a friend just a few days ago.

I notice that a comma has been added to the end of the weblink's address, so the address has been altered.

Perhaps that is a clue.

What could add a comma to the end of an address?

mjc

Sylvander, the link being cut off at the comma is a very common parsing error with most forum software. For some reason the software doesn't recognise the comma and what follows as part of the URL.

balebateman,

Are you running any kind of cookie blockers, popup stoppers, proxy servers?

Also get and run HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/) (tutorial for it www.tomocyote.org/hjt ). Pleas post the log here.

But, but, but......

MJC
The new addres has a comma added to the end of the original and correct address.

Take a good address and put a comma on the end.

That's what has happened.

Nothing was cut off.

mjc
03-19-2003, 01:08 PM
Sylvander, then hmmm....it looked like a cut up URL on first glance, but yes the comma is appended to the original address, and I don't think the was one on the line it was given on.....Some browser hijackers will prepend/append things onto URLs to redirect, tag or otherwise intefere with your normal browser behavior.

Balebateman,

It is doubtful that you would have any of those running unknown in the background, but get and run Hijack This.

the direct download link is http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

I've also had this problem of new windows freezing up, it isn't as bad as when I had windows 98, but it is still occasionally happening in windows XP.
