When I install WinXP it says it will take over an hour but it actually takes 15mins. Would expect your pc to take from 30-60 mins - have you actually tried it?
PS How much RAM do you have?
You can also speed up the install time by copying all the installation files from the CD to the HDD first - and then run the install from the HDD.

Try the second thing Paul said, copy the install programs to your hard drive and install from there. However, I would run the diagnostics from the hard drive maker first to make sure it isn't dying on you. If you CPU was going, it would probably just go and nothing would be happening, but your hard drive can die more slowly or have other problems. If it is running ok, I would use the maker's utilities to zero it out before starting over with the install.
