Anyone using the new Spybot version 1.2? It has a new "immunize" feature that is designed to block known adware. I just cranked it up tonight to see how well it works. Anyone else have some experience with this new feature?

The immunize feature is very similar to Spywareblaster, it sets the kill bit on a large number of ActiveX based spyware. This prevents it from downloading/running. It will only affect ActiveX spyware, but that is the majority of it.

IMO, the kill bit is the only thing MS got right with ActiveX. The kill bit is a method of crippling any particular ActiveX control by telling the OS that it is not safe to run or is otherwise invalid code and not to be executed.

My advice, fire SSD back and click the immunize button. You have nothing to lose, except the chance to be infected by about a 150 crapware ActiveX controls.

Funny you should mention that Flick -
Finally was able to update the program..Their server has been overwhelmed.
Anyway, just came from their forum. Seems the help file for "immunization" is unavailable (To those who upgraded from within the program)
There is info available though but i'm still doing a bit of research before I go ahead and "immunize" myself with the "185 possible protections"!

Looks like some nice new features in the update though.

(Edit) Boy, I seem to have this uncanny nack for posting something and seeing someone beat me too it before my post shows up! :D

See immunize v1.2 (http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?s=3e8a3f372ed2ffff;act=ST;f=28;t=213 8)

Some people had trouble getting the Immunize Help file.

Hi cnm!
Actually, I'm a member of your forum. I'm also a pain in the neck sometimes. (People here will agree :D ).

At any rate, I was having some problems with a few things back when v1.2 first came out.
None of them were a big deal, but they irritated me at the time so I ended up un-installing the program.
The good news is, I really missed it!
So, I installed it again.
Got my help files, a bunch of cool "skins"-(I'm a sucker for that stuff), and I run the program often...Sometimes, several times daily.
In the final analysis, I feel a really good program got even better.

Hi there jabarnutcase :)

Yeh, the launch of 1.2 had its rough spots. Didn't help that PepiMK forgot to post an announcement, so it took folks (like me) completely by surprise. In the final analysis, I feel a really good program got even better. Absolutely! And the fact that PepiMK hasn't posted anything much for a few days must mean that he's hard at work fixing the mostly rather minor bugs.

Incidentally, anyone interested in knowing about bugs can see a complete list at Known bugs in 1.2 Please read this FIRST (http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?s=3e8a3f372ed2ffff;act=ST;f=28;t=220 4) or en francais Bugs connus dans la version 1.2 (http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.cgi?s=3e8a3f372ed2ffff;act=ST;f=28;t=246 6)

Thanks cnm,
Really good link on potential problems. I like this much better than ad-aware and use this one alone. Trying to cut down on duplicate programs.
