hi all
i borrowed a sony dsc-p72 digital still camera from my mate's sister.
i had to install the drivers for the USB to work, but i hit a problem.
enclosed is an picture of what's happening. as far as i know when the drivers are being installed, this pop up message appears.
When I click on it the installation terminates?
Any ideas….
Thanks
Bale

This is just a wild guess, but:
Perhaps you need to get the latest Windows updates [at "Start>Windows Update"] so that the latest RPC [Remote Procedure Call] stub IS compatible with this driver [which probably didn't exist when Windows 98 was first released].

Sure, you can download them, but they probably won't work right. I would look around some more and see if you can find the files needed for your version of Windoze. Sometimes they will say in small print that the Win2000 version will work in Win98 too....

My experience of the Windows update site leads me to believe that:
It scans your PC’s Windows software to see what you could have but haven’t got then lists it all and allows you to choose what you want to take.
First you take all the “Critical Updates”.
Then you see if any of the others take your fancy.
Keep you eyes peeled for anything that might relate to a plugin for the “Remote Procedure Calls” module.
Don’t worry if the software was designed for Windows 2000.
Assume that Microsoft knows what they are doing and if they say it’s ok to use it then go ahead.

hi
i did what you told me to do, so i found the update to RPC.
the following link leaas you to microsoft...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321915
it goes on to say, that if you have Microsoft Office 2000 or an Office 2000 Component Is Installed on Your Computer.... obtain and install the Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1), but i'm not using office 2000.
so i used the other method: Microsoft Office 2000 or an Office 2000 Component Is Not Installed on Your Computer
If Office 2000 or or an Office 2000 component is not installed on your computer, obtain and install the Mcrepair.exe tool. To do so, please visit the following Microsoft Web site, save the Mcrepair.exe file to the desktop, and then run Mcrepair.exe
i did just that, i ran the mcrepair.exe installed the software and then tried to install the digital cameras drivers again and the same message,
Unhandled Exception
Error: 0x80070725
Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub.
Setup will now terminate.
came up and terminated the installation.
any more ideas.

Well, isn’t that a puzzle?
You have found the specific fix for the problem but it APPEARS to be failing to fix it.
Perhaps you didn’t do it right?
Maybe you could check that the file versions match those specified as correct, as follows:
Asycfilt.dll (2.40.4515)
Oleaut32.dll (2.40.4515)
Stdole2.tlb (2.40.4515
Olepro32.dll (5.0.4515)
“Any program that installs different versions”….. “may create a mixed file version environment with files that are not compatible with each other.”
Hence such as this would lead to:
An “Incompatible version of the RPC [Remote Procedure Call] stub”
being detected.
Did you also read this?
http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?articleid=Q105810
Particularly the part beginning:
You Are Using Windows 98 or 95
On Windows 98 and 95, this error may be caused by a bad version of oleaut32.dll. To correct this problem, follow these directions to remove the old file and reinstall it.
Warning: This resolution requires you to modify your System folder. Modifications to the Windows system, if not done correctly, can cause serious problems to your system.
