I have install a new floppy drive in a computer after the old one quit working. With the new drive I can read the files on a floppy disk but I can't save a file to the disk. I get a message stating this device is write protected. I swapped drives and ribbons but still get the same message. By the way the tab is set right on the disk and there or no conflects with other devices. Is the controller bad or I'm I overlooking something?

It's possible the floppy could be damaged, have you tried writing to a new untouched disk?

There is also the possibility of it being a defective cable...try replacing it.
And if none of the above work then yeah the controller may be bad.....
