Power Probs

Hey everyone. Bit of a problem. Here goes, recently i have had problems trying to power down my puter. Im running XP, and whenever i want to to shutdown the system its gets to the screen where it says windows is now shutting down, the screen goes black, sounds like its shutting down, and then powers up again. This doesnt happen all the time though, but it is annoying when i leave the puter on a timer to shutdown after a download has finished in the middle of the night, to see that in the morning it is just sitting at the login screen. Any ideas as of what the problem could be?
