I own a Plextor 16/10/40a Cd-rw for a year now. And for about a week its been having problems. It would write a data CD and when I try to open it, an alert box comes up saying...

" J:\ Not Accessible.
Incorrect Function. "

I have yet to have a successful burn since last week. I installed the firmware upgrade and it still doesn't work. I tried to create an audio cd and it had all of the tracks listed but no sound is coming out. I played on my laptop and cd player and there is nothing.

This burner isn't used very often, I only used it about once per week. I thought it may have been the cd-rs I'm using but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Should I consider finding a replacement or is there something I can do to straigten this out?

You might want to just try reinstalling the burner software.

Have you added any new hardware/software recently?

I reinstalled the software and the problem is still there. I haven't installed anything hardware or software recently. I really don't think they would contribute to the problem.

Is it possible that the cds can damage the drive? It's just a hunch because the cd-rs that I'm using (TDK) that comes in those 50-pk smells like burnt plastic. There aren't any visible damages of the CDs but that smell just told me something is probably wrong. But I still used them anyways since I was able to burn them successfully.

Just to note, I haven't received any other errors with the drive such as buffer underruns or anything else in that nature.

I tried another test with the burner. I put in an audio cd and used DiscDupe 2000 to copy the cd. Well, I was surprised to see that the disc worked. So apparently, the problem is with Easy CD Creator 5 and not the drive. I already tried reinstalling the program but the problem was still there.

Does anyone know how to create a Plextor image? I thought about using DiscDupe to write an image to the cd, but it would only recognize Plextor images.
