Hello,
I have a 500MHz Celeron Compaq PC with a 6GHz hard-drive and a 96RAM memory
Recently the hard-drive has been making some noise while I'm working on the PC and the system just slow down, it doesn't really freeze up but it slows down; then after a few minutes the noise stop things seems to go smoothly but suddenly the CPU reboots itself. What can I do? Please HELP!!!

Welcome to the PCguide forum, NegLakay. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
Sounds like it's thrashing about? kinda like it's struggling to give you just that one more litle bit o' data?! I would say you've got a dying harddrive there partner! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
i would highly advise you to back up all pertinent data, cause from the sound of things she's about to crash, and it won't be a pretty site, believe me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
I would suggest you start looking around for a new harddive. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

How about three votes for the dying drive theory?

Thank you guys,
But it seems like it's a little late...
Yesterday, when I got home, I turned the PC on and got a message about clusters being messed up and it ask me to run the Scandisk (DOS version). About 99% of the test was complete when the PC seemed to have frozen. SO I turned it off ...then 30 minutes later turned it back on to receive this message "unable to find program to run". I couldn't do anything
What should I do. Is there any hope for me to get into the disk so I can try and recover a few important files before I throw it all away? Please somebody help me!!!
There are a number of data recovery apps, none of them are really free though, just do a Google (http://www.google.com) search for data recovery and it should bring up a few "Hits"...and there are profesional recovery services...but they can be expensive. You aslo may be able to get limited access to it by booting to a different disk and seeing if any thing can be found on it (doubtful, though).
I just noticed that it is a Compaq...that make make things a little harder since Compaq has a special "systems" partiton on the drive that it needs in order to run (or easier, if the damage is only to the Compaq partition). I would det a new drive, run a complete restore from the Compaq cd, and see if any files can be accessed from it afterwards...just don't do anything with it in the mean time.
Also, how old is it?
