View Full Version : Simply NOTHING Happens...

Hello there,

I recently (literally one week ago) purchased a brand-new PC complete with Gigabyte GA-7DX motherboard, 256 MB Ram and 1400 MHz AMD processor. Everything was running like a dream until yesterday morning when, following a night of intense internet access, I tried to boot the system. Unfortunately I was met with absolutely no response – I can hear the fan turning as normal but the hard drive does not kick in, there is no signal to the monitor, no BIOS, no anything. The DVD and CD-ROM drives are receiving power so there doesn’t appear to be a problem with the electricity supply. Why would such a new computer, considering I have not altered ANYTHING, suddenly decide to completely give-up on me? Some of my friends have suggested a virus has eaten my processor/BIOS, is this possible? My knowledge of computers is extremely poor so please be gentle with any technical jargon. The computer took me ages to save up for and so I am feeling very sad at the moment - any assistance whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

could be the fan stoped and the chip fried, (defective fan could have been installed), it takes under 10 seconds to cook an uncooled T-Bird processor.

only a week old??

send it back, do nothing to try and 'fix' it, still under warranty.. send it BACK (now).

Before you pack it up....do you get a POST beep? If so, have you checked the monitor is connected properly?

good point (above).. try using another monitor to see if you get a display.. but don't take the case off that will VOID any warranty you may have.

At least contact the support of where you bought it from, they may be able to tell what you can and cannot do before voiding your warranty and also what procedures need to be taken in order to send it back...but yes since it is a week old put that warranty to use and let them worry about the problem!

From what you have described as the problem, my guess would be you have a defective video card.......which the warranty will cover....Naturally, it could be ANYthing from vid card to toasted cpu; however, if you hear a single beep shortly after the system is started up, it probably isnt the cpu or memory....you might have a bad monitor...that also fits the description of symptoms. In ANY case, your warranty will cover ALL of the speculations you have read about on here!

Thanks everyone for your speedy responses!

I guess I will have to send it back. By the way, is there anyway I can tell if the CPU has blown? I have checked the video card and connection a hundred times. Also, I have taken the case of to install my old ZIP drive that I had on my previous 486, I hope this does not void the warranty...

Thanks again,

John

Checking the cpu? Basically the answer is negative without slipping it into another PC and see what transpires. Rule of thumb: They either work or they don't. Best Bet ... Remove what you have added yourself and RMA this puppy. You might explain to your friends that a virus will not eat your processor.
