When I play games that require intensive video my frame rate goes nicely for about two seconds and then pauses for a half second and then goes and repeats.

system:
p4 1600
756 mb sdram
Geforce4 Ti4600 128mb ram
Sound Max(integrated sound card)

This started recently and had never happened before.

Things I've done already:
Tried different monitor and cable
Tried different video card
Upgraded to DirectX 9.0
Upgraded Vid drivers to latest Nvidia
Ran Spyware catcher
Ran with sound off
Ran dxdiag w/ following results:

1. running directdraw and direct3d tests showed frame pause problem
2. testing music had problems (choppy sound) w/ Sound Max Digital Audio
and MS GS Wavetable SW Synth (emulated). Problem was similiar to vid test in that audio was fine for about 2 secs then paused and then repeated at repetative intervals

I went through System and checked for problems and found none so far.
I did about 10 more things but cannot remember them.

Check for a virus.

If none is found, then restart the computer, open System Monitor, and enable the following:
unused memory, swap file in use, and % CPU usage.
Also, check if your hard drive's LED flickers during the studdering.

If SM shows that the unused memory amount is low and the swap file is in use(HD light flickers), and/or the CPU usage is high, then do a clean boot to troubleshoot it.
(If you do not know how to do a clean boot, then post your O/S and we'll give you a link with instructions).

Thanks for the suggestions I'll give them a try. I don't know how to do a clean reboot. I'm running w2k professional.

I solved the problem. I uninstalled all the non-necessary programs that I wasn't absolutely sure were safe and that I had recently installed. Not sure which program exactly was causing the problem but I suspect it was my Iomegaware. Seems to me the problem started soon after I installed that software. I might try reinstalling it to see if the problem reoccurs.
