The computer is an AMD K6 500. with win95.
The problem is when booting it goes as far as "VERIFYING DMI POOL DATA" and stops right there. I am able to come to the C:> Prompt with a boot up disk . Without a boot up disk I get stuck. I formatted the hard drive and reloaded Windows 95B . It loaded but when the computer reboots in the Installation process, It halts at the same spot.(DMI pool data).
Can someone tell me what's wrong?. Is it the RAM?

Try this and let us know if it works.
Go to BIOS setup and set all hard drives to AUTO-Detect.

This (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q287/5/53.ASP) is MS's advice.

This (http://www.maxtor.com/products/DiamondMax/techsupport/InformationBulletins/15007.html) is something from Maxtor.

There were several hits with a Google (http://www.google.com) search...you might be able to find one that applies to your hardware setup.

I've seen tons of suggestions from folks in the short searching I've done...but the answer that appears to work better is using the /mbr switch with fdisk. You do this prior to fdisk and format.

Just boot with a boot disk and at the prompt type fdisk /mbr http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Then carry on with your fdisk session setting your appropriate partition and then setting it active. Then do your format...and install.

Here (http://www.enablers.com/board/messages/878.html) is the link of the sucess I mention. I hope this works for you http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm wondering if this would be related to the AMD/Win95 issue that involves 350MHz or faster processors. Usually you'll get a Windows Protection error, Device IOS failed to initialize, or You Must Reboot Your Computer, rather than simply hanging at one point.

If the machine has been previously running, it may be possible to replace the registry and solve the problem, but that implies Windows was installed and ran long enough to accumulate a couple of registry backups. If all else fails, the system.1st and user.1st files, when renamed, will repace the registry to a fresh install condition. System.da0 and user.da0 should work too. That involves renaming files in DOS, not a task for those who are not DOS literate...
