I've just bought a new computer and have put Windows XP Home edition on it. The other computer on the other side of the wall is running on Windows 98 Second Addition.
Last night I put a network card in the one with Windows 98 on and hooked it up to my onboard network on the PC with XP on. Can I network the two computers while they are running on different operating systems?
If I can then any ideas what I could have not done?
First Make sure the Cable you are using is a Cross Over cable
Unless you have a Hub or Router between them
Second make sure you have the Network and or work group setup correctly

Hi. There's a few things that can go wrong with mixed OS networks - I had the same problem myself. try this:

On my PC with XP on it says network cable unplugged! It isn't unplugged though! What is wrong? Any ideas?

Have you checked to make sure your NIC card is properly seated and that all connections are intact? A loose connection is one of the main reasons you might get that message.

Or you may be using the wrong cable, as Rick said. Or the network card in one machine is not installed correctly.

There is a WOL cable with the network card I have for the other PC, can't find a socket for it on the motherboard though?
If u hadn't guessed my knowledge of networking it pretty bad.
Is the WOL cable essential?

No it is not essential.

I can't c y it is not working! I have the cable plugged in, the one that is like the one u plug in to a modem except slightlty bigger, that is the one i should be using, right? The cable came with the network card. I have installed the drivers for the network card on the other computer. It just says the network cable is unplugged on this one, but itz not :-( I don't understand.

The cable which came with the network card is likely a "straight-through" cable. This may be used to attach to a hub or a switch.
As I understand it, you are connecting directly to another computer, correct? Doing this is called connecting two computers "back to back". In order to do it you need a different cable, called a "cross-over" cable.
A cross-over cable looks the same as a straight-through cable. It has the same connectors on the ends. BUT it is wired differently inside.
A cross-over cable may be bought (or made) at a local computer shop, or purchased online. If there is a local shop nearby, just ask them for a cross-over cable and they'll know exactly what you mean (unless there is a different term for it in Wales!).
Another solution would be to purchase a small hub. Then you would connect both the computers to the hub using straight-through network cables.

I've ordered a crossover cable from ebuyer now, 5m so i can put my PC back where it was b4 and put my speaker back where it was.
Well thanx for that anyway... will post again in a few days or whenever I get the cable through the post to say whether or not it is working.
